I'M GOING TO LOOK ATT HIS BIKE OVER THE WEEKEND. ANY ADVICE ON WHAT TO BE LOOKING FOR? HAS FSH AND IS VERY CLEAN IN THE PICS. PRICE IS CHEAP FOR THE BIKE BUT DOES THE MILEAGE HAVE ANY BEARING ON THE VALUE. UNDER £7K! NO EXTRAS WITH THIS BIKE.

If it’s a Gen 1 LC I’d avoid it like the plague.....if it’s a final gen Hex I’d consider it... either way I reckon £7k is strong money for 50k bike... it would need to be immaculate and FSH..

The gearboxes on early LC bikes are horrible... the ESA will be worn out.... trade carefully.

No need to shout.

That's the spirit. Buy the cheapest GS you can find. ESA can be fixed for less that £500. Just PM Denz0 on here (TTechSuspension)

The early LCs also had a lighter flywheel so no torque like the TCs.

Make sure the charging system is working properly, early gs had alternator issues and it's an engine strip to sort, a cheap bike often ends up an expensive one!

They are quite lively on the pick-up - the later ones are heavier which damps the inputs a little.

If it's had a replacement engine (many did, including mine) it will probably already have the heavier flywheel.

Where is the battery to check voltage output from alternator please

How will I know if the gearbox and esa are worn?

Under the right hand cover beneath the seat, you need a Torx 25 to remove it

There is an accessory +ve terminal in front of the battery or you can undo the rubber strap and slide the battery out to get to the +ve but you’ll need to disconnect the -ve to do this

Check the shocks visually for oil leakage and bounce the suspension a few times, it shouldn’t bounce more than once

Cycle each preload setting in turn and make sure the ESA raises or lowers the rear of the bike accordingly

The gearboxes sound like a set of pétanque balls in a cement mixer, this is normal :nod

I was under the impression that these bikes were bulletproof. Considering the mileage what would you suggest it is worth?

It's worth finding a later bike tbh, the early ones are not a good buy, gearbox and clutch can be prone to annoying probs, has it had the modified pushrod etc, seriously find a newer bike there's plenty out there

I understand but need a low chassis model and maximum budget is £8k

I got a 16 plate GS factory low, low miles and 2 years dealer warranty for a tad over 8K

dont buy the first one you see, take your time and shop around

I had a good ride on a 2013 LC before I bought my 2016. I like the lighter flywheel, it revs quicker. Gearboxes, some were prone to issues but a minority. Wear earplugs if it's a bit clunky. The 2013 clunked into first, but so do many other brands. It changed up and down very nicely. Alternator failure, I think there was one reported on here? Not heard of any others. You may be able to use the bike LCD display to see if it's charging. Check the water pump isn't on its way out, there is a little weep hole on the left below the cylinder. Not a big job to put right. The key is to test ride it then you will know. I have a 2016, gearbox is perfect up and down, shocks don't leak and work perfectly.

Make him an offer on the spot? For the same cash you can have a nice late oil cooled 1200GS.
Had the 2013/14/16 and 19 models. First one dumped all the oil from the little hole by the left side rocker cover, sometimes there is green marking around that hole, cooling escaping. Could be that the pump is kaput but some leakage is apparently acceptable. Clutch/gearbox issue on the 2013 model, I had the factory fix but didn't made any difference. Later models have a brass valve inserted in that hole. The 2014 model was not better same shit clutch/gearbox issue. 2016 model massive improvement but not perfect. 2019 finally they cracked it.

Yes thus is the one. Saw it briefly a week ago but buyer wouldn't drop below £7250 then. It is very clean to look at with no signs of rust/flaking paint on engine, final drive etc.
He says he's selling as he bought it to go to Europe but covid arrived and now commutes into London daily {16 miles}.
Tried hard sell back then and seems keen to move it on.
I've noticed loads for another grand with mid to high 20k mileage but all have standard height suspension.
Previously owned the iconic model (2016) but struggled with balance on cambered roads even on soft single rider settings.
If I could alter height including stands myself it wouldn't be so difficult to find a good bike.

Is it possible to alter pre ESA bikes so they are lower?

you only need to lower the shocks 30mm & the centre & side stands

Just be aware that the lc is 60mm wider across the seat than the hexhead..

so yes its lowered 30mm but 60mm wider, so your feet still dont touch the ground any better,

If you need to get your feet down you will need the ultralow seat

I was going to put a Sargent seat on it as standard seat isn't comfortable for my backside
