A new guy on the forum, MattG posted looking for help with a 54 plate Dakar that won't run, here

I voluntered, I know, never volunteer for anything :) to take my trusty test meter and see if I could help.

I think that the bike was bought as a non runner although it's only showing around 27,000 miles. It was delivered to a bike shop who said it needed a new loom but after some months Matt was asked to take it away, still not running.

It has a replacement loom from Motorworks fitted. It has replacement coil packs fitted. It has a replacement ECU fitted and the part number matches the original. I've now had a go at cleaning up all the conectors I could find as there was a fair bit of corrossion in some of them.

The clutch switch has been cut at the lever and the two wires twisted together, they are making good contact when tested at the connector end.

The side stand switch has been disconnected and the white and brown wires twisted together.

It spins over well on the starter. There is a poor yellowish spark at both plugs when the plug bodies are earthed to the engine case and the engine turned over. I've assumed that the top plug is number 1.

The fuel pump is running and fuel is being delivered to the injector. The wrong cable had been connected at one point to the injector, ( the US market tank vent valve connector) which resulted in large amounts of fuel being pumped through the engine. The correct connector is now attached but there is no fuel delivered when the engine is cranked. I put the meter across the terminals and ignition on gives a reading of 10 volts which drops to 8.6 when the engine is cranked, presumably because the meter simply can't respond fast enough to a pulsed supply. What should the voltage be prior to cranking?

Any suggestions as to where to start. Common issues with this bike? With the O2 sensor out of circuit should the wires be left open or connected?

Matt is ready to sell the bike for parts, here is a challenge for the collective.

P.S. Checked all fuses, relay connectors all good, neutral switch is functioning and dash light works as it should.

With so much being changed on the bike and wires twisted together etc I'd get it hooked up to a gs911 or dealer diagnostics to see what fault codes are present. It could save a whole load of time and money in the long run.

I should have checked the voltage at the battery but didn't as the starter seemed to be spinning the engine at the speed I'd expect, only checked at the terminals for the injector power feed. I'll do that later. He has a battery charger on hand so can hook that up to boost the voltage if necessary.

If the voltage is that low and it's spinning at what seems like the correct speed I'd do a compression test, could be that the valves are not seating properly or you've got another compression leak somewhere.

Try a decent battery that voltage sounds too low

That's what I'm thinking.
I'm seem to remember that below 9.6v the ignition pack fails to get excited so no HT spark is produced.
Keep both spark plugs in the bike and use a spare plug to see if the spark ispresent when the battery is having to turn over the engine against the compression stroke.

Hi, Had a similar problem with my 05 Dakar, turned out to be the Idler Actuator valve situated on the injector body, 2 x cross headed screws just pulls out, beware the Oring, use a can of carb & choke cleaner until the tip looks nice & shiny, brass, and replace. They get gunked up with the oily fug from the airbox and stale unleaded fuel. Makes the world of difference when sorted.

Good tip,Adrian had a similar problem and that was the cause.

Welcome to the site RPM.
