As per the title.

I've my 1150gs for a year now. In that time I've put two litres of oil in it  I'll giving it a full service in January but before I went out yesterday, I noticed very low oil level and put a litre in it to bring it to the correct level_I check the level again today and it's spot on.

Should I be concerned? In fairness, I've been doing a lot of short tesco type trips (:augie). Would this account for it?

No sign of any leaks.

Slightly concerned that oil could be leaking into the clutch but I've no reason to think this other than an anecdotal caution from the bike shop I bought the oil of yesterday.

:thumb2

I think that you'd know by now if a litre of oil had leaked into the clutch.

That's what I figured.

So it's burning a lot of oil. No smoke. I expect the bike was not run in right?

Time has nothing to do with working out oil consumption. Do you work out your petrol consumption by how long it's been in your tank.

Like petrol MPG it's mileage that causes oil to be consumed and you haven't mentioned how many miles inbetween top ups. :D

What viscosity oil are you using?
They burn the 10/40 stuff as it is too thin. Try 15/50 or 20/50 as it is a bit thicker. Fettled mine anyway..

Interesting. I've done 8000 miles in the last year and I've been using 10 40.

I'll put 20 50 in it and not worry about it. Cheers.

My old 1100 was run on semi 10w 40 for the last 60K of its 125K and never used any oil. My newer 20K bike uses a very very small amount at the moment. Looks like you got a bad `un :D

Your not rideing it hard enough. I've had a few go those in 1000 1150 and 1200 and never had to top up oil. I ride 90 km every day. My f800gsa is 2 years old has 56,000 km on it. Never burns oil. Give it to me for a few weeks and I'll sort it out. I'll even buy my own petrol. JJH

Ha!

i ride it hard on a spin but not poodling around. There were just under 50.000 miles done before I got it so I'm blaming the previous owners!

Anyway, oil is cheap. Thanks lads.

Aye it was babied, when run in

One of mine (i'm the 3rd owner) was and it used about 750ml over 2500 miles in Spain in Oct, whilst the other has been owned by me from new and was run in properly (plenty of revs, up and down the box, no labouring in a high gear) and doesn't use any between services

They all do that Sir...
Well the previous 5 x 11xx's I've had have done....

My 1200 used to use a bit of oil, a couple of years ago I accidentally overfilled it whilst away, the level was right at the top of the sighting window, unbelievably it stopped using oil from that point. I keep the oil level high and it just does not use oil anymore. The mileage is now 61,000.

My 1150 does all of 31 km a day - when I am going to work at home.
It uses oil.
On longer trips, no oil used.

It'll be ok. I'll monitor it. If it grinds to a halt or goes puff with a lot of smoke I'll worry about it then.

2l in 8000 miles is pretty good and way above the limits recommended by BMW, mine used 1.6l on a 4500 mile 2up trip in September and I'm happy with that, if it's using a wee bit of oil than at least it means that it's always getting some fresh as well
I've had mine since last May and have done 17000 miles since, when I first got it I was using 1l in 2000miles but some careful thrashing has obviously helped :thumb
