Being a Garmin man, I'm wondering if their units are actually getting worse instead of better.

Obviously the more they pack into these units, the more there is to wrong, but the 590 seems to be the worst unit for issues so far.

With a couple of weeks to go until the warranty runs out, I have sent back my unit for replacement...................... This will be my third one in two years, and it only get used for pleasure.

The 590 fails to hold it's charge, even though it states the unit is fully charged, and the on screen tabs/buttons are unresponsive. Taking two or three prods to get them to function.

Anyone else getting these sort of issues, or is it just my bad luck ?

On a side note, there have been no issues with Thurgo who I purchased the unit from, or Garmin who have stated they would replace the unit again.

Seems a remarkably popular untit on these pages. Better than the rip-off Nav V, apparently.

I'm hoping Garmin send me a refurbished unit. At least I know it has been tested, and any problems sorted out.

Fingers crossed.

The battery life is dismal when not on a mount always has been, really don't understand why as its the same battery for a mobile phone.

Yes I have the same issue with the on screen buttons mine is set to recalculate when prompted and I have to touch it at least three times to activate.

My biggest gripe is the on screen zoom it seems the only way to use the zoom is with the tiniest touch pretty much the tip of your fingernail any thing larger like your finger print and it goes into the next map screen this is really annoying.
Using a gloved finger at 80mph can be a challenge and an unnecessary distraction.

That said (and I am on my second one the first was replaced because the battery wouldn't charge through USB) I am quite happy with it despite these issues the search functions are far better, building routes on the device is easier the up ahead, function make searching for fuel stations or restaurants etc. easy (also on 350 & 390) the map scrolling is also fantastic, there are other good features should you choose to use them.

I have moaned and groaned about the routing functions when building a route from basecamp and activating them, with more user experience I am more aware of how the device calculates and functions I am far more happier with it, it really is a great GPS.

I just started to use my new 590 last week and the battery is already knackered.
Garmin UK are replacing it but it will be a month before they have them in stock, I just hope it arrives before I head off on my hols.
I was also a bit unsure about the responsiveness of some of the buttons and was putting it down to me not being used to it.
I'm getting worried now.

I think mine is going back. Having used it for the first time on a trip my issues include:

Poor battery life off the mount.
Unable to get rid of food place icons but unable to add others such as fuel.
Turns itself off when adding a petrol station to an existing route.
Fuel functions don't work as it keeps changing back into car mode.
Media centre connects to the iPhone, recognises music but selects the wrong tracks and no music comes through anyway.
Mute unmutes itself.

I could go on. Hopefully I've got a bad one.

On a positive note my mate has a 660 which in comparison is painfully slow.

Whilst Ive a 660, Ive never really ever needed to charge the battery as unit is always on the bike cradle except when Im updating unit or transferring routes when its connected to the pc via USB.

Should'nt screw with your holiday plans if its just the battery Fran.:beerjug:

Well Garmin have sent me a whole new unit, including all the mounts........... again !

That's one 590, and three lots of bike and car mounts............... Might have to have a sale.

New one holds it's charge and responds instantly to screen inputs.............. If it stays like this, it will be a good result.

Thanks Pablo1, but the power to my cradle switches of when I turn off the bike and as a result the 590 dies as well. It's not a show stopper, just annoying to me.
/F
