Just come back from 1000 miles around Ireland and have noticed something with the gearbox and gears that I’d not noticed before, they all have their own characteristics...

It’s got to be said that I’m doing this at 3K and under light load.. put the power down and there is no problem. Also I think having the suspension set hard transmits a lot more to the pegs than when I’m on it by myself... everything I say below is feeling through the pegs.. no noise or anything.

Mine is a 2015 so let’s forget 1 and 2, they just clunk

3 always feels a bit rough

4 pulses, I guess its fuelling.. kind of wa, wa, wa pulsing

5 is the annoying one... you get a bong, bong, bong through the pegs, about 3 or 4 times a second so quite fast

6 is fine, no problems at all and will cruise all day long.

Having zoned in on this, I’ve just been around the Allan Jefferies and taken a 2018 1200 out for a spin... This will have the newer box but I could identify the same thing in 3rd, 4th and 5th, but not as much as mine is doing.

My oil was Motul so I’ve just replaced it with BMW oil and I’m off for a spin less the bags, softer suspension, and I’ve also disconnected the battery for 30 mins.. see how it goes.. anyone else notice this at all??.. or just me being over sensitive after 8 hours in the saddle :)

Join the club, most common is 4th. My '14 bike did it badly (traded it in) my '17 bike does to a lesser degree.
This issue has been dicussed on here within the last 6 months.
I think it is the gearbox itself as it is rev related and not road speed related.

its 5th going bong, bong, bong that gets me, like a bearing has a flat on it .. feels horrid...
but, got rid of the boxes, taken the pre-load off for one rider.. just been out and it probably the same as the 2018 one I just took out.. hardly a hint of it? Didn't notice it last year when we went to France.. but maybe Ireland is a slower place.. more time spent in 5th at 3K...

It may do.. and the only change from my last trip to this trip (other than the oil) was to have a new exhaust cam due to the clicking... I've already discussed doing this with Warlord so I hope to get it arranged soon....
strange how removing the panniers and top box fixes it especialy as its on light load?... or is it making the shocks softer so it does not transmit as much?

Does yours do it ??... will have a look for the posts where its been discussed before ;)

To be honest beaver I have had so many years with Harleys, anything BMW feels magic and good, but I do get vibes now and again especially in the 4.5 to 5k range, after that it all smooths out, I suppose it is the way of the beast, however removing panniers and topbox, might mean something metal is touching and creating a vibe, bloody gremlins.

No.. its from the box for sure... I can still feel something, but nothing like when it was loaded... and only in 5th gear?

So has to be something about torque as when loaded pulling harder obviously, maybe this narrows it down.

Ride with a few bags of cement on pillion seat, and job sorted............:D

no.. light load on the throttle, but only when bags etc fitted so additional weight.... and only around 3K

Pull the clutch in and coast.... it goes away ? Throttle body balancing... mine does it too. All my boxers have done it.

so, pull the clutch in, then let it out and carry on? it will be gone?.. think I tried that.. its more a mechanical fast knock.. was going to hook it up the the 911 today, but forgot with everything else.. will give it a go...

when they did my cam late last year, they said I had the most up to date software...

No, if you pull the clutch in and coast you’ll know if it’s gearbox/ drive shaft or engine related. My cyclic vibration goes away if I pull the clutch in so I know it’s not the running gear (wheels, drive shaft etc) causing it. Not saying yours is the same.. just something to try..

No, I know its coming from the box.. soon as I change its there, soon as I go into 6th its gone.. load it up it goes, cruse it goes... I know where its coming from.. just wondering what it is ... and as said, I could feel it in the 18 plate one as well... so do they all do it??

15-18 so looks like you have a yes, now you need to try the 1250..............to get the demons out of your head.....:D

Just an off the mind thought beaver, you said you done a 1000 mile ride, maybe it is simply the tyres are getting used and this causes the vibe............:rob

I get the same vibe through the pegs from about 20mph to 23mph. In gear or with clutch pulled in, it makes no difference.
Bike is a 2017 GS Rallye

No.. its 5th gear..or fueling for 5th gear. Imagine you had a tooth missing off the gear. It's like that but only at light loads. The demo bike did the same as mine is now with all the gear off.... 4th it's not there, 6th it's not there. Got the 911 out last night but you cant balance the carbs on a LC.. only adjust mixture as you might expect. But you have to run it up hot to do it.. so didn't bother.. reset a few more things so see how it goes Monday when I next get it out
