Or chuck your mid size bikes in a van and do the gravel Alps passes.
I will be doing them again this year, I have not been for a while now.

I had a couple of nights in st Martin de Rey . Very nice. Spent a day walking around and drinking beer. A bad job, but someone has to do it.
Last time I went to Ile de Ré was 1985 - so after 40 years I am maybe due a re-visit
I suspect you’ll find it a lot busier down that way these days

40 years ago it was mainly undiscovered….barring locals I expectI suspect you’ll find it a lot busier down that way these days
And not compatible with a Yorkshire purse. I looked at the Ile but hotel prices are a bit salty. Found a place in the Old Town of La RochelleI suspect you’ll find it a lot busier down that way these days
You haven't changed much JBI prefer the spoken (written) word from fellow GS’ers
Yes I have done a lot of France (and most of Europe) since the 1980’s etc …..but nothing for last 6 years whatsoever (due to the Covid years & looking after my aged Mum, until recently) so pretty rusty on accommodation front and places that I might have missed altogether /not seen fully and hence the question
Volcane region is a good shout, as is CF area
Me in 1997 in the Ardeché, on my first GS - bought new 6 weeks earlier & en route to Bol D’Or

I would agree, if starting from Calais..Another option would be to go across to north eastern France and explore the Vosges mountains and Alsace. I’ve been there a few times and the grand ballon area is spectacular

I will and we’ll discuss your plan, in detailLet us know if you ride it and / or better still, enjoy it.
Take a day off between days two and three or, better still, ride around on the D roads, south and east of Angoulême.
Or across to the East, war cemeteries , trenches, and across into Belgium
