Everyone talks about the first service on the 1200gs as being at 600 miles.

The handbook says the 'running-in check' is to be done between 500 - 1200km (300-720miles)

My problem is this - with a week to go before my booked-in first service I've clocked 608miles. With another week of commuting and the journey to the stealer I'll just scrape in at 720miles.

But what if I turn up with more than 720 miles on the clock - will this effect the warranty at all?

Anyone had problems with exceeding the mileage on the run up to the first service?

Thanks.

Dont worry!

I had my first 600Mile service at 950Miles. Its not affected any warrantee claims.

This is my second GS1200 and its been very good. Only heated grip failure so far and new rear brake disk and pads due to pads wearing down to metal in about 2000miles. The bike is April 06 and has done 21800 miles.

My first GS1200 was march 05, this was a disaster bike and nearly everything was replaced. Rear abs sensor 3 times, all abs electronic boxes, complete wiring loom, gearbox oil seals and clutch, fuel pump, front engine cover, rear subframe (due to missing welds!)

Shit mines in for ABS pump or servo something being replaced on Friday. They moaned at me it was going to cost over 1000 squids. Ahhhhhhhhhhh yeah so foooking what i've not driven it for weeks as it's trying to kill me

I done 806 miles before my first service , then started to run it in with a little trip to Morocco .... :bounce1

I had to top the oil up twice a day ........................ :o

I did 10,000 miles before my first service....oh i forgot...it was a new car :augie

as in the only problem you'll cause is less money at the dealers and more in your bank account for a while

I had just over 800 miles on for 1st service after which It`s now done nearly 2k It`s not used a drop of oil........yet...........maybe shouldn`t have tempted fate like that!!! (and yes i check it every 2-3 days[bit paranoid?])

My local dealer told me it was OK to run over 600 miles before the first service but keep it below 1000 as BMW could get aggy if some work needed to be done under warranty....took it in with 970 miles on it!

The B*W service manager told me he preferred to see a few more miles on for the first service and was quite happy up to 1,000 miles His argument being a lot more debris is found in the oil at the second service if it was first serviced at around 600 miles, but push the first service to 1,000 miles and a lot less is found at the later service.

I guess it is down to do you want a lot of crap in your oil for 1,000 miles or not a lot for 6,000 miles?

Ermm.... well I know what I mean :)

I was told the same just keep it under 1000 miles, if i was you give your dealer a bell and ask for his advice ;)

Yep - I was told anywhere between 600 and a thousand miles and no eyebrows were raised at yesterdays service with 730 miles on the clock.

I did wince at the £149 bill though. I forgot that the quoted £120 was excluding VAT.

Hmm, my last 600 mile service was 99 quid including VAT and they collected and returned the bike, however I have a feeling the one a couple of years before was around 40 quid.

My 600 miles service was less than 100, I was well chuffed. In fact my 6000 mile service was less than you 600. I thought I was going to get fleeced. My mate was charged almost 400 for the 600 mile service on his aprilia.

It will be interesting, next week my GSA is going in for a 12000 service and the annual check and i was quoted £170 all in, which seems cheap to me, but it was the reason I've waited and gone to them instead of others so i hope its correct:nenau

Paid exactly the same for my first service for the BM as for my previous CBR6 at £98. Thought that was ok.
