6000 mile service

Just been quoted £230-£250 for a 6000 mile service! is than normal?
oil/filter, gearbox/shaft oil,valve clearance check, check over plus loan bike.
Been told £150 for labour plus parts.
Love the GS1200, but finding everything BMW on the expensive side.

If you work it out, the dealer is charging you a couple of hours labour (at dealer rates) plus parts which sounds reasonable to me.

However, get in touch with Mikeyboy who is a fantastic independent in Melton Mowbray who will do you a cracking job and probably save you a few bob in the process.

Sounds a fair price to me. Try looking at Triumph owners forum. Someone on there asking if £670 for 12k service is reasonable on a speed triple.

I would also normally advise you to use Mikeyboy, but then if I kept doing that he'd be too busy to do my bike when I needed him.

I have been quoted £310 in Grimsby for the 6k - including brake fluid.

They are really easy to service yourself - basic stuff like valve clearances and fluid / filter changes. ( brake fluid change I'd leave to an independent - same with balancing throttles ). Dealership recommended changing both discs when one the bolts on my R/H front had free play at a cost of £££££!! DIY solution about £100 and 30 minutes work.
Plenty of guides on here or you tube to walk you through.

Sounds about right mate.

BMW have all our bikes and service schedules/costs etc on a central database so you'll not find much difference dealer by dealer. Yes, independents will be cheaper but if you ever need some good will from BMW a regular service history with them will certainly help.

been pondering this issue myself but from a different angle. Problem is that so many of the posters on here with little or no real mechanicking skills place a heavy reliance on a service record when it comes to buying a bike. Personally I would ignore the service record ( my father ran a main dealership so I know a bit about what really goes on) and instead concentrate on the condition of the bike. Nevertheloess, if a service record is going to get me a better price in a private sale then maybe I shoiuld have one and a main dealer one carries more kudos than an indy to the uninitiated.

Thanks for the info guy's, bit surprised at the hourly rate these days that's all, as I used to service my old thundercat myself!
The break fluids were changed just before I bought the GS.
Can't fault the dealership, always have time for a chat etc when I pop in for a coffee after a ride out.
Will make a note about mikeyboy for the future and birdseye i think you're right a tidy bike speaks volumes about the owner (if its in good nick for the year then there's a good chance the internals have also been well cared for, BMW service history or not)

I found an old invoice that had their hourly rate @ £96 +vat.
Hence i service myself.
