600mile service cost...

How would it still be within warranty, without being serviced by a BMW dealer?
I don't think servicing yourself automatically voids the warranty. If you encounter engine problems down the road, and they can prove that the service you carried out caused the issue, then they could refuse to repair it under warranty.

Guess it depends what is in the warranty T&C's, but i thought under EU law they couldn't force to use them. I think you just need to retain proof that you serviced it to the manufacturer's requirements (receipts for oil/filter etc). I haven't bothered to look if that is actually true, so pinch of salt and all that.

From what I remember the EU legislation that allows you to use a non franchised dealer/mechanic to do your servicing without effecting your warranty applies to cars, but not bikes. Again like you I'm not 100% on this so anybody wanting to go down that path would need to check their own circumstances as if I am correct it could vary between manufacturers if some allow it even if they don't have to.

My thinking is that you`re much more likely to be looked on favourably with a service book fully-stamped by BMW in the event of any `goodwill` warranty claims (or claims just outside of the warranty period) than you would be with one signed by Joe Bloggs with parts receipts from Halfords.....
I`ll probably get the 3-year/18K service done by BMW in a years time to `complete the set` (just had the 12k spendy valve check one done) but after that i`ll be doing it myself, there`s not really much to do on a bike service these days.

Yeah, as littleade says, that ruling only applies to cars, which was rather short sighted. See:

Out of curiosity though, I had a look at the warranty details (link to the PDF at the bottom of the BMW warranty page), and it does read to me that BMW says it's OK. I imagine you would need to be meticulous in record keeping, and be able to prove a level of competence, to make sure they can't argue.

FWIW BMW extended warranty only insists upon BMW parts and a V.A.T. registered business doing the servicing, doesn't have to be main dealer.

For what it's worth, on my 1250 I have been quoted £176 and change for the 1st service at Vertu Rotherham, might be worth a call to them or the Shipley branch.
I can't see them charging an extra £95 for 1 extra litre of oil.

Over the last 20 years, I've read on this site, many examples of 'main dealer goodwill' post warranty period...all due to paying the extra to have a main dealer service and getting those stamps in the book. On a £20k bike it seems like the sensible thing to do (getting it serviced by the supplying dealer, who I presume an owner was happy enough to use to chuck £20k at in the first place)

Thankyou Joe85, couldnt of said it better if i tried :thumby:

I use the main dealer for all my servicing, whether my cars or bikes are in or out of warranty. There are a number of factors involved for me (answers on a postcard to the usual address) along with getting help if things go wrong one of the main considerations for me is I always trade my cars and bikes in, so with a full dealer service history with the dealer(s) who sold me the car/bike it gives me some leverage on the next purchase with them and gives their competitors less opportunity to try and beat the trade in price down because of its service history. As ever you pays your money......

From my own experience of buying my 2019 1250 gsa from new and having it serviced with BMW for the first 3 years within its warranty period, its something i would never do again.
I found most of the standard of work slap dash at best, when you do the work yourself, you know whats been done and that its been done properly, plus you really get to know your bike. Now i also know not everyones confident spannering which is fair enough, but if you've half a clue they really are a piece of cake to work on really clever design to be honest.
And of course theres the cost saving...i prefer put the money saved into the fuel tank :thumby:

Now i know bmw servicing isn't cheap but iv'e heard some horror stories with Triumph and Ducati o_O

I was only saying this yesterday to a mate. I've always done my own servicing. Always used genuine BMW parts, And a GS-911. 1150 and current 1200. It really does make a difference. Covers come off, And cleaned inside and out. And like has been said, You know its been done. And properly. I was away with a mate, I noticed his plastic tank cover panels weren't fitted correctly, The clips being over the top. He said his bike was serviced by BMW three days prior.
Slap dash....

I traded my S1000R Sport in back in Nov, it had a full system, and now the dealer is asking for the OEM headers if I have them (I do).

Gotta be worth a free service. Can only try. If the shoe was on the other foot I’d be getting a 1k bill.
100% right Joe, the dealer can pay up or they don't have

if its any consolation I was charged £240 for a first service on a Ktm 690 this year. No service book now they hold on their database.

They are all at it, though bmw seem the worse including their cars and the computer based servicing holding your feet to the fire.

I shelled out £810 on our bmw car a couple of weeks ago, service and a warranty plan excess of £250 for a knackered ad blue. Get in it at the weekend, only another service reminder comes up right in centre view, want me back in feb for a brake fluid change, no doubt another £100 to pay - relentless!!!

Just proves, that the most economical way to remain a motorcyclist without bankrupting oneself, is to keep your existing bike, and maintaining it.

I might be wrong though. But near £300 tokens for an oil change and oil filter is a taking a wee of a high cliff…

What is the current BMW hourly £rate + Vat I wonder?

Agreed. If you can go without the latest thing. Owning out right and self servicing using decent quality parts and Moto Scan / GS911 is the way to go.
