I stopped to fill up with fuel today with a fully functional speedometer, and rode away with one reading 0 mph (after a few hundred yards of swinging needle).

Any ideas?

Bike has been getting rather wet lately:D

Has anyone used a Halfords push bike speedo as a replacement? Are they accurate? Do they withstand the rigours of motorcycle life?

Cheers for any replies.

Further internet research has revealed that many owners have had their speedo malfunction. It seems that water gets in.

So BWM can't make a waterproof sensor. This is actually very worrying - these things are in charge of the engine management systems and the ABS/servoed brakes of the new GSs.

I used to have a F650 Funduro, and that had a mechanical speedo cable, Im not sure about the later 650GS though.

I think that works off the rear ABS sensor - dunno what happens if you don't have ABS though.

I had the "swinging needle" syndrome on my "Y" reg Dakar after 2k miles of owning it, and it resulted in a speedo sensor change under warranty - which unfortunately also means a new "zero" reading speedo at the front...............

I then rode down to Folkestone to meet Roy to go see the fat twat off, in the pouring rain, and had no speedo for about 80 miles.....................

Fine once it dried out

It's a known fault with the F650GS speedo. If you're sure that the rear sensor is working correctly, it may be poor connections in the speedo head unit, or water has got into the unit itself.

Some time ago, I drowned a F650GS and the speedo didn't work again until the whole thing had dried out.

Another time I got yet another F650GS Dakar thoroughly wet, after doing the water splash loads of times at the end of the BMW off-road skills day in Wales. Again, the speedo stopped working for the rest of the day.

I've dried things out with a hair dryer.

It's working again.

At least I'll only get done for speeding when it rains.

Sorry to be the bringer of bad tidings...

but we had the same problem with Lucys 650GS, pull up a chair and read this in a darkened room.
Speedo quits, so I have a dig at it, and trace it to a front wheel ABS sensor. One new sensor fitted £45ish, and, Doh, wasn't that. So back to the drawing board, Various people pointed out that you need a good battery to arm the ABS, which all works on the same circuit. Aha, thought I, new battery fitted, and, Doh wasn't that either.Mean while, the ABS had gone tits up altogether, so now the speedo and ABS were donald ducked. Ahaha, both those work off the rear ABS sensor, another new sensor, and, triple Doh.
At this stage I decided to let BVM plug it in to the magic box, no chance, couldn't work out what was going on, so we set about manual poking with pointy things.
I took the multi plug connector off the ABS pump, and it was all a green and furry copper corroded mess. Two of the terminals actually broke off when I pulled the plug off, and according to the official dealer workshop book, the two terminals are for the ABS and speedo, except they're not, the german tossers have developed the photo backwards in the book (I kid you not).
Back to the chase, the problem was now getting cornered in the direction of the biggest chunk of metal on the bike. Get home, rip the ABS pump off the bike, and poke it with a very pointy stick. A nice Mbw sealed unit, but not for long. the plastic box with all the electrics in, attached to the pump itself, was, eeerrrr, duley opened, shall we say, and the whole box of tricks was full of water. Problem traced.
Now off you go, and try and find a second hand abs pump. No chance. Mbw new one thankyou very much, just don't ask how much:shoot: It's quite common on the C1's you know, well you do now.
The end
And Lucys 650 is in the for sale thread if anyone wants a good un
