They're supposed to be clever these can bus things arn't they?
My understanding, as you say, is that if the Zumo battery is low it will keep the canbus open until it is charged.
Having said that, I always remove the Zumo when leaving the bike for both its safe keeping, & also because i then know there is no power draw issue.
The Zumo's Battery should not be low, if you have been on a long enough journey it should be fully charged, once the Ignition is switched on, the Canbus Feed is open and the Zumo is powered of the Bike's Battery, this charges the Unit and gives power to the Zumo. once Ignition is turned off it should close the canbus feed, Hence the Battery Power Issue message appearing and you should experience no power draw issues to the Zumo or the Bike's Battery. you should always have more power in the Zumo than when first plug in to Mount after a ride out.
if you have wired a direct feed to the Bike's Battery you will experience a constant power feed to the Zumo even with the ignition switched off and this will lower the Bike's Battery whilst the Zumo is in the Mount, and even after the Zumo has been removed you will experience a slight power feed issue due to the Mount drawing power even thou nothing is attached. i have just changed from a Zumo 550 to the 660 both mounts fitted via the Canbus, Never any problems with the 550 but the 660 i have just experianced your fault symptom and more, here is a email i have just sent to Garmin Support and Pix mania........
i have recently been away on a trip and have been plagued by a problem with my Zumo 660 that i purchased at the Beginning of June 2012, the Unit was a Refurbished Unit Purchased off pixmania.com and came complete with 2yr Warranty.
I Seem to have a Intermiitate Power Fault -
I own a 2012 BMW GS1200 motorcycle, i purchased a Canbus Plug from BMW, i paid a Auto Electrician to attach the Canbus Plug on to the Garmin Supplied Mount and Plugged it into the Motorcycles Canbus Plug. I tested the Zumo on various occasion before i set off and had no trouble.
i had set off on my tour of Europe, when half way through the first day, the fault first appeared. I was riding along the Motorway and the Unit would appear to loose it main power feed by the screen turning dull and shortly after it would appear bright, then fall dull again, a short time later the Power Feed would appear to disappear again followed by a beep on my ear piece and then the "external power lost continue on battery power" Option/Message/Countdown appeared on the screen, i would press the Yes Option to carry on Battery Power, and then not one minute later the Screen would go Dull then Bright and the message would re appear prompting me to make the option again. after a short while it settled and i carried on, the same exact same process happened on the second day. On the morning of the Third day, i plugged the unit into its Mount as soon as i started the Bike the external power loss message appeared. then it stayed on battery mode, after riding for about an hour i became worried about battery life for my days riding so i stopped, removed all the Unit and Wires from the Bike and checked all canbus plug work carried out, checked all the unit for anything loose and cleaned all connections, i re-fit the mount, set up the unit and carried on my journey after a further 3 hrs the unit came back to life on it own accord, from then on it worked on the Motorcycles power source and never had a problem for the next 5 days. On the Final Morning of my Trip i Connected the Unit to the Mount and the "Insert Battery" message appeared above the Garmin Message Shown on Unit Start up. once removed from the Mount, the message disappeared but once placed back in the Mount, the Message would reappear. i removed and cleaned the contacts and replaced the Battery but this failed, i managed to make the fault disappear by turning the bike's Ignition On and Off several times. Since returning Home, i am in a process of finding the fault, yesterday i spoke to BMW just to see if they have ever experienced the faults i have described, they advised me that the Mount maybe Faulty. i removed the Canbus Plug and Wired the Mount direct tp the Battery Feed so i could rule out the Canbus Plug and yes the fault is still apparent. i feel the fault may lie in the Garmin Mount as Advised by my BMW service has Garmin ever heard of a problem like this. i await your Advice
Kind Regards and Thanks in Advance ............
Its was a pain in the neck, especially when in conjested spots and you needed it most! if i get a reply, i will post it up. also BMW said they'd have a quick diagnostic check next week. i'll let you know how it goes on.
