hi, have bought 660 noh and have updated to NT 2013.10 3D have followed some very helpfull threads from the forum and have created and loaded some routes from basecamp all good at the moment. first question regarding french speed camera rule do i need to worry about it with the updated software i have just installed or do i have to turn it of. question 2 is regarding some routes i have done on basecamp and actually using them whilst on the bike. i will be in europe later in the year and one of us in the group has a smaller tank range so can you get prompts of petrol stations allong the route. many thanks for your help in these matters. I can certainly answer the French speed camera question. As long as you have firmware version 4.50 or higher (not maps, they are different) the speed cameras are labelled as "accident hotspots" and therefore are legal to use in France.

Details can be found here Zumo 660 Firmware Change Log

To find fuel along an active route do the following:

Menu > Where To > Near (at bottom of screen) > My Current Route > Points if Interest > Fuel.

Bear in mind that in the UK this will, for some obscure reason, list convenience stores as well as petrol stations :nenau You just have to judge this by name, i.e. Spar won't have fuel but Shell will. On the continent it works as it should.

Doesn't have every petrol station so you might find one sooner. Have used this touring with a friend on his Ducati 996 which is gasping for fuel after 120 miles whereas my VFR will get 200 miles. Works well.

hi, thanks gents will firmware check later and will try the required btn order whilst out on the bike this weekend. INBOC

Best thing to do with the fuel if riding in a group. Set all the sat nav (or yours if you are the lone sat nav) to the smallest tank range on the fuel indicator - this way after the set fuel range (say 150 miles?) the little red icon comes on the main screen so you can then press this in transit and choose a garage for fuel - hey presto you all stay together because you fuel at the least capacity bikes rate....

This is all good but will not necessarily keep you on your programmed route. I don't think its possible to find fuel stations this way - those that are coming up on the existing route. I certainly would like to know if it is. If I'm doing a route programmed on the pc I will guess at where we may need fuel stops and include these in as weypoints along the route - this way you won't be deviating from the route you're on.

I think the fuel tank icon only searches using "nearest" as the criteria. If you do the "where to" and then select "along route" or something like that, and then fuel it'll order the fuel stations for those along the route. Assuming you have a route in progress.

Don't forget even if the 660 shows a fuel station, it might be a convenience store, or not a fuel station anymore, or may not be open for serving fuel.

I have not tried that - will take a look next time. Thanks.

See your point but we tried it like you suggested on a recent trip - we were either before or after needing fuel which ended up in frantic overtakes and the same trundling around villages for ages trying to find alternatives.

None of us took a laptop with us so we couldnt plan the routes to suit the garage requirments by setting the fuel stations as via points.

In the end we settled on the fuel indicator as a warning (in this case it was a Triumph Explorer 1200 that needed fuel every 150 miles - 170 miles). When the indicator gave a warning check the fuel stations, if there was one within 0.5 miles then we would go direct to that (we also found that the best way to set the Sat Nav up was to make sure it was not set to recalculate you could just then zoom out a little and see where to go to get back on route). If nothing close by when indicator goes off just did what you suggest which meant we would assess what was on route.

It worked for us but mainly because the Tigger was looking for fuel at around lunch time so it meant that we wanted to deviate off route into a town or village for lunch anyway. But like I say that suited us not everyone is the same.

What I try and do is have a fuel station as a waypoint either at the end or the start of the day, then I know in approximately xxx miles I'll need to fill up, look for a fuel station near there, and it becomes another waypoint, and so on.

If you do that as a group then everyone knows where to meet up at regular intervals, and the one with the smallest tank is happy that they won't be pushing their bike along.

But if the fuel station is closed, you'd need a plan B.

Of course if your a "real" adventurer, you don't plan anything

Wot? Like I said in post #3  :D
