Hi guys,

Bit of advance preparation this. I am hoping to head out to Africa long term within the year and i'm giving serious thought to sticking a newish xt660 tenere in a container to take with me (whilst I love my 800gs its not the right bike to take out long term).

I've done some research into improvements I can make to 'Africanise' the bike but in the process also noticed the bike isn't without its fault. The problem is, I'm struggling to find detailed information on the fixes. Can anyone offer advice on:

1) Problem with the regulator? This being too close to the front wheel and causing wiring problems?

2) Cush drive wearing out quickly?

Note that despite once rebuilding a 1988 250XR I'm not technically minded!

Any advice, links, pics would be gratefully received.

Thanks guys.

You will get a more precise answer from the folk on www.xt660.com

You have mentioned the two faults that most have experienced, I only had the cush-drive fail on my 660Z, the wiring was fine.
Some say it was due to overloading of the loom circuit, but i had GPS and heated grip running on it with no problems.
The rest of the bike was great, and I would recommend one to someone who needs one bike that can do a bit of everything.:thumb2

says it all really :augie

Nothing wrong with mine that needs attention.

The seat is broken in and is comfortable now

its a bit buffety, no worse than other similar bikes tho

its bit tall for hopping on and off a lot.

The rear cush drive is the problem with them for some reason - theyre too soft. I'd glue them in place to stop them moving around and also to stop them falling on the floor in a pile when you get a puncture.

i've just done 8500kms and no problems

The heat from the engine and the way the exhaust is routed near your leg then under the seat is quite noticeable in hot climes.

Bike seems easy to work on, not many special tools needed, good repair manual available on .pdf

Great, very capable bike.

Bought one new in feb 09 done 8000 miles no problems with reliability.

Quality of some off the metal poor.Spokes, hubs, brake pipes.

Breather box replaced under warranty with modified baffled box.

Just sold it this week and have bought a f 800 gs.Lets see how we go.
