660 update 3.90 Using Webupdater (July 13,2010)

Using 3.90:
I did a 130 mile trip yesterday and all ok, (apart from missing turns as mentioned), not sure if it's my imagination but the unit seems to be quicker when using and drawing maps etc.

What happened to version 3.6 and 3.7 as they jumped from 3.5 to 3.8?

@Wapping, I know I can get support from Garmin and have my own support person as Garmin contacting me as a result of a Garmin Facebook page I setup - see my sig.

V9.. (on a recelt warranty relacement)
Still missing turn icon (Seems to be left turn only)
Can be slow to render the road image ahead sometimes
Noticed loosing sattelite reception under completely blue skies a few times

I'm using it in the car mostly but strangly I was doing the same with my first one without much bother. Troubles only started when I was using it on the bike mount (erratic shutdowns, freezing, not charging etc).

I had a warranty replacement and it came with 3.7... very similar to 3.5

I rode everyday since the 3.90 update and all my previous issues are fixed. No more shutdowns and I agree with the previous post that my screen seems to refresh faster. All in all I am pleased with this update

I have one other request of Garmin and that would be the POI alert and weather alert. When they pop up in the top portion of the screen they are so small no one can read them however if you are not on the main map page they are fine. Garmin please increase the font size and overall alert size so they can be read.

After a very long and painful support process with Garmin they have told me:

"I have told you I put this forward to Navteq and our cartography team it is not a bug it is just not deemed as necessary to have a sign on this particular exit."

Which is utter bollox, why is the sign there on firmware 3.5 and not in 3.8 & 3.9, and to try and tell me there shouldn't be a sign for a junction off the dual carriageway is offensive.

Does it announce the exit, and just not have the top right, blue box arrow? Just trying to understanding the impact.

cheers

Whilst supporting Garmin to support me I have had to down grade to 3.5 so I can get this scrn shot as they don't belive what I am telling them!

The exit is clearly show top left in 3.5

Isn't that one of the improvements for the 660 over the 550? I know my wifes Nuvi 1340 has the lane help that seems to be shown in 3.5 ......

Now I have gone back up to 3.9 and did a ride simulation, you can see the exit sign briefly appears just before it changes to a roundabout.

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LlXNMlNbOS0&hl=en_GB&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LlXNMlNbOS0&hl=en_GB&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

This only happens once, when I repeat the simulation it doesn't appear again until I turn it off and back on again.

Looking at the video defo looks like a SW rather than map bug then as if the data was not in the map, it could not "pop up" like the video. Good luck getting Garmin to acknowledge it.

Not sure what conditions cause it, as all my M-way ones worked fine today (routing to places I know just to check it out).

cheers

Finally, after sending Garmin videos and scrn shots using 2 different Firmwares they have done a U turn and now admit there is a problem.

"You have been very patience while passing this information into us which like I promised you on our conversation I would bring it to our software team for a fix. Ronnie has replicated this issue and has informed me that he will be contacting you on this for more details. I am sorry that it took you a couple of emails to prove this but I also hope you have understood our position and the way to deal with bugs. Your video and screen shots have been very helpful"

At no point in my phone call with them did they say they would take it to the software team (as claimed in the above email quote), they claimed there was no problem at all, now they admit there is a problem.
I guess we will have to wait some months for the next firmware to get a fix for this - if lucky.

I was at Garmisch and asked the Garmin people there about the issues with the 660.... one simple and continuously answer was "user error".... right...

Working for a software company I know that software sucks, and there are errors (which will only maybe could be solved if someone report them), but with enough pressure things can happen within days.....

I spoke with the Garmin guy at the Touratech do in Wales, and I was complaining about the appalling Road Trip software on the Mac -HE told me that " Garmin are a hardware company, and we don't really get involved with software !".
Seriously - so I began to give up hope at this point- seemed pointless to suggest that I always thought that Sat Nav was RUN by software. Hate to be a smart Alec.

PS Installed v3.9 on my 660 yesterday ( via my Mac of course), and my 2 trips today , granted only about 25 miles each, ran without problems. Also, an added bonus -the pronunciation and fluency of the direction prompts seems much improved -they appear to have run the phonetics together a whole lot better -ie street names sound more natural. Didn't notice any missing turn icons either, but I do tend to try to look where I'm going more than the screen.

i t doesn't look like they have much interest in mapsource OR road trip. just a little add on bonus, a bit like the crappy photo editing program one might get with a cheap camera.

they seem to struggle badly with the unit firmware too

A thousand mile round trip to, from and around the Yorkshire dales, running the latest software.

Three unforced shutdowns, for no apparent reason that I could see and one freeze-up.

Other than that, worked fine on my 660.
