My suggestion would be:
Hull-Zeebrugge ferry
Then head towards the Somme, Verdun, the Ardennes, Eiffel and Mosel.
that will give you some great riding, some history, and some scenery. Without the need to flog down to the Vosges, Black Forest or Switzerland.
The good think about the ferry from Zeebrugge is that, althoygh it sails around 9pm, they start to board any time after 5pm. So if you get there early, you do not have to hang around on the quayside carpark, but can get on board and fed and watered.
I thought the food and drink on the ferry to Newcastle was extornionate when I tried it in 2015. I think fish & chips was about £16 from memory!!

younger06 went there with my father in law the first time we went out drinking together after meeting, with a load of his rig mates. good way to break the ice though 
cheers guys for all the suggestions. given me a good base plan and now just have to figure out the when. hoping early october, unless that's a bad idea with weather. cold doesn't bother me but pissing rain might put a 'damper' on things.

You don't have to wait until October for that, it's absolutely pissing it down here at the moment while I try to bbq under an umbrella...#summer !!!

As someone born in Carlisle, you should know that Northern England is far from flat and featureless. A scenic route to Hull and then crossing to Zeebrugge avoids Holland, which is actually flat and featureless. I'd second the Ardennes/Eifel/Mosel idea, but also suggest the Sauerland just to the east too (Dambusters tour, twisty roads etc.)
Dutch Alps near to Nijmegen are impressive, even if only a few hundred feet above sea level
