howzit guys.

i am coming over to the uk in the next 6 weeks,i have finally decided i will buy a 800 GS,and give it a try.
i have owned and competed on [south african gs challenges] dakars,x challenge,1150 gsa,1100 gs and a hp2.
i also owned a 1200 gs but never got to enter the years gs challenge due to many bones being broken while in training.[takes forever to heal when your almost 50]
i only mention this so you know that i have ridden other bmw bikes and that i am pretty serious at off road adventure, and not a newbie..[wife rides a dakar].
i didnt go for the 800 gs when it was launched here i south africa as it was hideously expensive at the time.[well, still is actually.]and very close to price of the hp2,which i thought would be better.
anyway, back to the story,i have seen a few on this site for sale with low mileage and much bling.
i am going to ride a lot, sometimes two up but not always.
i will go on just about every off road ride advertised and try and do a few long trips with members when they go away on adventures.
[we will be based in suffolk near ipswich, wife already there actually, this adds no value to the thread but thought i would let you know:)]
so i was wondering;
1, do you pick up problems with fuel capacity when out with fellow gs travelers?

2, what capacity is the tank and what milage do you get?.

3, what is the std suspension like? fair, weak or a must upgrade?

4,the seat looks really awe-full,how much is a good upgrade and what is the difference like.

5,i dont want an airhawk cushion.

6, do the touring type screens work on this model? or is there a huge amount of buffeting?

7, how much is a full service ?
oils and filter i can do but valves etc i know nothing about on this model.

8, why does the center stand look like it was made the the legs of one of my old school chairs ?? does it break ??

9,how comfortable is it for a pillion? here i am talking with a decent seat,is there legroom or is the pillion really cramped ?

10,has the motor proved reliable, whats the biggest problem encounted on the 800 ?here talking in general, usually each model has a known weakness somewhere, ie, the hp2 has a crap rear shock, needs the front forks re valved, the tank is too small,it eats rear tyres and drowns itself when crossing deep water.

11,will the 19 inch wheel from the 650 twin fit the 800gs with no adapters?
i like to have a road ready set of wheels for my bikes,i`m not fond of knobblies on the road in the wet.

12, I see that e bay in the uk is king of the classified and all the bikes seem to go so cheap [compared for example to this site,i am not being offensive here but after much research see the same bike pop up on e bay at a grand less .] is e bay the way to go and is it trustworthy. here in S.A. It wouldn't work, far too many criminals.

Thanks in advance for your answers, looking forward to meeting you all.

my must have bike will have ;[just in case you see one on the market in a few weeks] :)

GS 800.
abs.
heated grips.
panniers.
aftermarket seat.
big screen.
aftermarket pipe.[plus original]

bonus stuff would include, wide pegs, aftermarket suspension, aftermarket protective covers, sump, brake cylinder etc.

Could be just what you are looking for:D

Good luck with your search, I will leave the experts to answer your questions

sadly a little too pricey for me at the moment,:(
with the s.a. exchange rate its 11 of my hard won rands to your 1 pound, however its just about everything on my wish list sorted, :drool:drool although i see you dont mention topbox in the advert but have it on the pix.

I need to build that complete package for around 5500 of your British pounds. i think it can be done but obviously not with a bike with such low miles.but once again its a nice kitted bike there, great minds think alike :D

so i was wondering;

1, do you pick up problems with fuel capacity when out with fellow gs travelers?

Canning the 800 will still provide 180+ miles. Race-track 120ave at full-stink, cruising with rather than blasting past the 1200, you get 220+. Me, full-loaded (overloaded actually) 243 miles @60-65 mph average speed best so far.

2, what capacity is the tank and what milage do you get?.

16 litres, ..you already know :eek

3, what is the std suspension like? fair, weak or a must upgrade?

Sounds like you will be upgrading rear for sure, front you could just get new cartridges. It's a case you get more real control of the stability of your bike with decent shocks.

4,the seat looks really awe-full,how much is a good upgrade and what is the difference like.

£8 putnams stadium cushion, blow up jobbie. All the way to spending £500+ for custom dual heated seats mate. It's all in these here forums.

5,i dont want an airhawk cushion.

This is a statement, not a question ...i'm been pedantic now. So sorry, I also don't want a airhawk cushion, its £150 & someone could stab it.

6, do the touring type screens work on this model? or is there a huge amount of buffeting?

Bit of both, larger the screen more rain protection. More comfortable ride instead of hanging on for dear life @120mph. On the track ..as previously noted by our friends in the enforcement side of things. :augie

7, how much is a full service ?
oils and filter i can do but valves etc i know nothing about on this model.

Depends on the particular service, email a UK bmwmotorrad-deal. They will want to help you. :rob

8, why does the center stand look like it was made the the legs of one of my old school chairs ?? does it break ??

It's needed for ease of working on the bike, its just a tube that (shouldn't really share this with you) you could stash a serious little bit of mullah or documents inside. Unbung billy bosh, stuffage..bibberty bopp, bobs your uncle, dubbie back in, is it beer O'clock already? *Whistles*

There's also a nicely shaped compartment for accessing rear lights that handy.:beerjug:

9,how comfortable is it for a pillion? here i am talking with a decent seat,is there legroom or is the pillion really cramped ?

Women I've had on mine didn't complain. One was shocked at the speed we did, because she was so comfy. Who know's? Pick-up a hitch hiker with a spare helmet. (That would be a funny video to do)

10,has the motor proved reliable, whats the biggest problem encounted on the 800 ?here talking in general, usually each model has a known weakness somewhere / drowns itself when crossing deep water.

It has a tendancey to eat chains even the heavy duty stylee ones. Rounds off head stock bearing quite quickly if like you you enjoy a bit of the green stuff. :hide The grunt this beast gives out, amazes plenty of my mates.

11,will the 19 inch wheel from the 650 twin fit the 800gs with no adapters?
i like to have a road ready set of wheels for my bikes,i`m not fond of knobblies on the road in the wet.

God you sound like me, stop it. Yes it would be nice.. I think you can judge the real response within these words. :tears

12, I see that e bay in the uk is king of the classified and all the bikes seem to go so cheap [compared for example to this site,i am not being offensive here but after much research see the same bike pop up on e bay at a grand less .] is e bay the way to go and is it trustworthy. here in S.A. Feebay is the devil incarnate.

Thankyou :pullface

Ow the serious reply, *Boring* yeah I got my 800 off 'the :censor: company'. The people usually are real & sound, we could analysis loads of things within the remit of your question. But life & eating a hot meal must be obeyed. :bow

The 650 only has one disc, but the 800 has two. Bear this in mind. :D

Thanks for taking the time and effort to reply,i do appreciate it.
tank range is around the same as the dakar which is very nice,i was worried about fuel issues but i guess thats paranoia from riding here in s.a with huge distances between stops in some places.
owning the hp was a pain on that account.

sounds like the 800 is going to be my next wheelie machine .:thumb2

1. Yep, the 1200 runs out of fuel before my 800.

2. 17Liters, and I get about 300kms out of it. Depends on the use though, riding around, having fun, I can get att least 340km, on highway, large panniers, 140/150km-h, maximum 270kms.

3. fair, comfourtabel, maybe not sharp enough on high speed tarmac.

4. good question, don't know yet, just know the standard seat is painfull.

5. neither do I, I'll go get my seat adapted to my personal demands, doesn't cost more than a replacement, and it comes in every colour I like.

6. don't know, still have the original screen. Doens't bother me much, will probably look at Touratech for a taller one, just for winter.

7. no idea, only have the bike about 4 months, only has 8000kms yet.

8. I didn't want the bmw center stand, bought the SW-Motech afterwards. Quite pleased with the looks, and the use of the SW-Motech part. Just make sure you don't loose any bolts, like I did in Morocco :blast

9. Honnestly, no idea, and I'll probably never will know. Still have the 1150Adv. if the GF wants to go on a ride.

10. Perfect engine, enough grunt to follow the bigger beasts, only possible downside I find as it has less bottom torque. Than again, if you ga down a gear, you'll hardly notice.

11. Why not a second set of 21" at the front? One with knobbies, and one with a road based tyre. I can't see a big advantage of the 19".

12. I'd never buy a bike on eBay. I'd even never buy a bike if I can't first take it for a test ride.
About your demands, leave the aftermarket stuff for waht it is=> aftermarket! Seat, panniers, exhaust, all these things can be aranged after you find a bike, concentrate on finding the right one without looking at the toy goodies.

Grtz, Philip!
