Way back in the early 90's I was a Custody Sergeant at Vine Street police station, just off Piccadilly when a homeless chap was brought in having been arrested for something or other. In his possession was a cloth bag containing 320 threepenny bits; I know this because I made the arresting officer count them, but the prisoner was unable to explain where he had got them. The chap was released the following morning, complete with his bag of bronze.
Several days later the same fellow was arrested again, this time minus his hoard and with no idea where it had gone.
