It all started with the ticking of the throttle bodies getting louder and louder and then after a session at Cadwell Park maybe pushing the old bike a little bit more than I have before on the way home it started to make a very loud rattle sound.
Well of course on checking the throttle bodies they are worn out with a fair bit of in and out movement on the wheels thingys!! and the the bottom parts of the throttle cables with fraying on the cables - So luckily Battyman had a spare set of throttle bodies (as new) and with replacement cables - my good mate and a bit of a spanner man Bruce changed them all - job done - No the rattle was still very loud, so off to BMW Ocean to have a look.

This is where it all goes down hill - the Cam-chain is stretched and the right side tensioner is missing - yes broken off and dropped into the engine block - Ouch now it looks like a full strip down and replacement of the Cam-chain bits apart from fishing out the broken bits - It still can get worse with pistons etc its a wait and see process now, in the book its 14 hours of work - Ocean will look after me and help with the labour costs (They always do look after me) but I can still see a big bill coming my way -all this and I may be losing my job in a month or two as well. :blast

I'll keep you posted on the progress

There is no need to split the engine to replace the guide. ;) But whether a main dealer will do it or even know it's possible is another story.

Plenty of people have filed a tapered opening on the guide and snapped it into place.

The ones i've done and know of being done have never given a moments trouble since.

Not sure if its just a case of changing the guides / tensioner(s), but because I rode the bike some 150 miles with the problem getting worse - (Once I knew about the loud noise I stopped using it) also the fact that the tensioner is broken off and somewhere in the engine somewhere and I believe a cam chain its self is damaged and needs replacing.

My question now is what sort of damage would riding it have done in side? (i.e. damage to cam chain, piston rings / rods and or other bits in there)

If fishing out the tensioner bit really needs the engine to be split?

Both of these seem to be my problem now, apart from changing the Cam Chain & Fittings

Extra Info:-I did ride the bike 1.5 miles to BMW Ocean and apart from the noise, at low rev's it was cutting out, keep the rev's up and it worked e.g. pulled away and ran, changed gears OK etc.. The oil light did come on when it was hot in traffic (If any of the above helps give some answers)
