I read somewhere that the RT should be run on 97 octane. I have run my GS on 95 octane since I bought it and have never had any problems.

Which fuel should I be usung?

Run on the lowest "octane" that the motor doesn't show signs of pre-ignition. Any higher & you're just p*ssing money away....

Largely yes, but not entirely.

The 1200 has an anti-knock sensor and will advance/retard the ignition timing
to make the best of the fuel that it's running on. However, there is a limit to how much advance the ECU will apply. That is determined by the engine's ideal advance characteristic.

I should have added, or loss of performance :beerjug:

I think I put in 93 or something the other day in Austria

It was the cheapest they had and the bike ran fine :nenau

the RT manual does recommend 97 octane but its engine is in a higher state of tune than the 1200gs. 95 is fine for the GS

The new RT's specify 97/98 with it being able to run 95 with the knock sensor. Most of the new BMW's are going this way. Suppose they will make the new GS that way too

two SAME topics in the same page

anyway, my GS manual talks about "super unleaded" which I suppose means 97 (or even more?)... I used to use 100, I think I got a bit better mileage (not enough data though) and now usually use 95

dealer advice

I was advised to use 97 + for my 07 GS. Sales person reckoned it was worth the extra dosh. Thought I would try a tank full and see. I filled it Cambridge and the stated range was 194 miles. by the time I got to London the rang was down to 186 miles. So either it was the fuel, the crap computer or I have found the best short cut:)

Anyone else had this advice. the salesman can't have been on commission can he?
