Hi Folks

Fitted a new (ebay cheapo) fuel pump about 1.5k miles ago, seemed to work fine. Then a couple of weeks ago the 5A fuel pump fuse blew whilst I was out for a spin, replaced fuse and carried on. A few tankfulls later the fuse blew again. I replaced it (there's a pattern developing here, you can probably tell!) and this one lasted a few hundred miles. Yesterday I got through another two fuses in 80 miles.

When I fitted the replacement pump I had to cut the wires and resolder from the original pump as the plug was different. I suspected that my own cack-handednesss was at the root of the issue so today, I've taken out the pump and gone over the wiring. Nothing obviously wrong here, but I double insulated the joints and did the best I could to ensure nothing could short out. All back together and out for a short test ride, all was well for around 30 miles, I'd even started to imagine that I'd fixed the problem when....

POP! fuel pump fuse went again. Replaced fuse and rode 20 miles home. Could it be the pump sticking once in a while and that leading to the fuse going? The pump clicks away for a few seconds before startup (as it should) Any one got any ideas here?

Thanks in advance.

Your cheap pump is just using too much power and or it is starting to fail. It takes a fair bit over to blow a fuse and the fact it is getting quicker I would say it is failing. Course the filters could be closed as well causing it to draw too much.

May be put it up to 7.5 amp but if it blows this it could be faulty...

I'm happy to be proved wrong but I'm fairly sure the fuel pump circuit (amongst other things) runs a 10amp fuse?

web search reveals..

Looks like later bikes have a shared 10a fuse for ignition and fuel pump. Mine has a separate fuse for the pump, labelled 5a.

However, it occurs to me that the pattern replacement pump I've fitted might be for a later model eg one designed for the 10a shared circuit.

Advice please. Shall I bung in a 10a and see if it fixes the issue or is this a no-no?

Sorry if this is a dim question.
Nev.

Quick update.

Ran the bike with a 10a fuse today - ran OK for 20 mins or so and then the bike spluttered and cut out.
'Ah, that'll be the fuse then' I thought, stuck another fuse in, got the bike restarted and made it home.

On inspection the fuse was intact, leading me to surmise that the pump is definitely on the way out.

New pump from Ebay?

Thanks for the input guys!

Was it one of these?

I'd being thinking about buying one of these as a backup.

Yes, exactly that, from the same supplier. You'll have to cut the plug off the original and solder it to the replacement pump but other than that, fitting simple enough. I ordered a replacement for the one that packed up from them and they supplied it under warranty (minus postage)

Time to 'fess up though....... I've got a nasty feeling that it's all my fault......

At the end of October, I SORNed the 950 for the winter months. I've read (maybe here, maybe other sites) about carbs gumming up when the bike has been left standing and wanting to avoid this, I elected to drain the carbs. I know now that the pump relies on the fuel going through it for lubrication and what I SHOULD have done, is take the fuel pump fuse out, turned off the petrol and run the bike till it had drained it's carbs. Thus protecting the pump. What I DID, was turn off the taps and run the bike until it stopped, thus allowing the pump to run dry for around 3-5 minutes, which just might explain why it gave up the ghost.

New pump fitted, bike runs fine, do I send the refund back though.......??

That shouldn't have killed the pump (well maybe. 5mins a long time). An EFI pump, maybe, but these types, they don't run as hot. The seller is a Chinese company. I'd just keep the money.

Glad it's all working now.

these non genuine pumps are rubbish - check the ktm forum - mine failed after 2 weeks, another riders failed within 1000 miles - stick with genuine pumps with dr beans kit fitted

well, I've stuck the free replacement pump in (seems churlish not to) and I'll keep you posted. I accept that the cheapo Chinese route may well be a faslse economy but last time I looked, a genuine KTM part was 117.00 quid plus VAT.

Let's see how things go, currently 154 miles in....

OK - well that went splendidly! - got into the garage this morning to the distinct smell of petrol - Off with the bash plate to reveal that the new pump is pissing unleaded out of it's seams, ruining the mounting rubber in the process. So, lesson learned 'buy cheap, buy twice'!!

Now considering the Facet route as I've just checked Trevor Pope and he wants £125 plus vat for the pump and another 10 for a new mount. I think (from what I've read) that the Facet will prove more reliable and a little cheaper as well.

I'll let you know how I get on!

Facet installed today.
