Bit of a shock the other day. Pushed the bike back into the garage and heard a familiar metal on metal sound. Seemed the rear brake pads were finished. Got a pair of Ferodo platinum in a few days and fitted them easily with help of instructions here - http://www.r1200gs.info/howto/brakepads.html

I'd been checking the pad thickness because at the last annual service in October I was told that I had about 30% left, but only by looking at the nearside brake pad when cleaning the bike (not that regularly), and the pads have worn unevenly - the offside pads more than the nearside ones.

From now on I'll be checking them differently! I got just under 5.5k from this pair - the first set (from new) lasted nearly 7.9k. Must have changed my riding style...

Here are pictures of the difference between the nearside and offside pad thickness later - I was surprised at the difference!

When I had my pads replaced last year they were different thickness as standard. At the time I assumed that wear would be uneven as the pistons are only on the one side, so the thickness was to compensate for this.

It says in your link "note that the pad on the piston side is thicker"

Is it possible to fit them the wrong way around? If the wear is uneven naturally, hence the pads having different thickness, then having them the wrong way around would quickly eat up the thinner pad?

IIRC you cannot fit them the wrong way round as they are 'handed' to fit the caliper with an asymetrical design.

I have changed two sets of rear pads on my 1200 and they were unevenly worn both times (and no my sliding caliper isn't sticking).

You`re right, you can`t fit them the wrong way round, you`d see as soon as you`ve got them in your hand :thumb2

Shows how much I know. Its funny the more expensive the bike the less I get my hands dirty. Really should start spannering again.
