a day with the 1200gs wc

Think bmw got it wrong with this one

once im finished with the 800gs ill be jumping back on a yam xt1200 now theres a bike that rides like its meant to

Again , a pretender , slow , bulky and an lc will destroy it , I have ridden one , on and off road .........Awful ...... Now a KTM different story now thers a good bike ( not as good as the LC tho) but it does have soul . Try one you may find you like it .

I firmly believe the latest incarnation is indeed a Perfection of an Icon and is also appealing to the younger generation.....

Clearly some older mature owners get it, some don't and they're still pushing their Hovis bread delivery bikes up that long hill reminiscing about the good old days... "ay by eck lad" :comfort :D

Got chatting to a guy and his missus a couple of weeks ago who were aboard a new 1200gs,having just chopped in their beloved fireblade.

Both were loving the gs,both in their late 20's.

Having owned a lot of bikes from different manufacturers I settled on BMW because they offered things as a package that weren't available elsewhere (at the time).
I've had an F800ST, F700GS, R1200GSA (air-cooled) and F800GT and now have a 2014 1200GS LC, so I know the rotax and boxer engines reasonably well. The boxer has a different character and vibrates in different parts of the rev range but the rotax F800 engine is without doubt one of the most vibey and irritating I've had for any kind of distance work. All 3 that I owned had really irritating buzzing through all contact points and required grip puppies etc. to make 100+ miles bearable. The F800's I had were certainly not better made than any incarnation of the 1200GS - the plastics looked poor finish-wise and the engine casing on the F700GS peeled off within 1,000 miles of new (warranty replacement engine).
There is a hint of hunting at a constant 2.5K-3.5K revs and I get the occasional trouble getting 1st up to neutral (goes into 2nd but always goes back down to neutral), maybe once or twice a day, but other than that I think it is a cracking bike and far more like the bikes I owned prior to BMW. I know there is a lot of love for the air-cooled 1200GS but personally I find the LC much more alive, and in a different league to the 800's.

... also I test rode an XTZ1200 (10 plate) for a couple of hours prior to going with the F700GS and I found it had a horrible heavy clutch, felt really heavy for any slow riding work and the engine seemed peaky and unpredictable - no reflection on how a new model might perform but really put me off...

Whilst the 800gs was in having some work done today they decided to let me loose on the wc gs, so would I rush out and buy one........

not a chance in hell**

good bits :

Its seriously quick
good wind protection*
seat felt decent

bad bits:

Holy f**k what a shite gearbox clunky cant describe it enough
so many rattles and weird knocking noises coming from god knows where
bars way to far foward
felt cheaply made in regards to plastics etc
how many electric gizmo handle bar thingys
seems to have lost the rugged 1150/old 1200 feel
footpegs for a size 5 woman
Computer info too cluttered very hard to read*

all in all very disappointed tbh cant beleive anyone would be happy shelling out that sort of money on it and this had 2000miles on it

Yeah but you won't be one of us cool dudes :D

Have an 800 that I've done been pretty far east on as well as many other adventures, and recently bought the 1200GSA LC. Rode the 1200 before and was never a big fan until the LC version came out, and then I was sold (and over the KTM 1190 too). My 8 is tricked up and permanently shod with knobs now and will be kept exclusively for off-road. That little Rotax engine is bullet proof and did 50k miles in 3 years without so much as needing a valve clearance check. Personally, I think you're a little utopian in your taste. The 8GS is a brilliant compromise for distance and off-road, so you will have to compromise on some things. As for the 12LC, it's a beauty, for too many reasons, but isn't as good as the 8 in one or two aspects, but I can honestly say I wouldn't trade it for any other bike in production. Horses for courses, clearly, and some of us have more discerning taste than others. :nenau:cool:

Well it is just over 11k:blast or £11650 exactly ....

Nah mate. You got it wrong there kidda. 12k for the shit, piss poor ,watered down morrisons saver version. Im talkin full fat model, allsinging n dancin, gold plated diamond seat model. That comes with holiday to maldives for 9x weeks for 10x people every 6x months and free sandwiches on't plane.....

.... if you lot cant except and honest opnion....
Opinions are fine, each to their own.

But your opinion was simply just that.... and it was based on a very brief encounter, so nothing for us owners who really 'know' these machines to get wound up about :thumb

Nope not at all if you lot cant except and honest opnion then keep your head stuck in the sand

I can't speak for others but at least I gave some explanation of my opinion and I know the 800 series pretty well. You didn't mention riding offroad so the 800GS with a 21" front wheel is always going to be a compromise on road. Your assessment was very subjective (cheap plastics? The 800GS is worse in this respect IMHO) and seemed to indicate that the 1200 was not as good as your 800 because it isn't an 800...

Anyway, you gave your opinion and others gave theirs:

What did you expect? Everyone to agree with you?

A limited opinion is my polite answer but better stlll stick your head up your arse and we'll keep ours in the sand:bounce1
