I have a 2003 (53) 1150GSA in silver with about 43000 miles, good condition, a few goodies,
Tobinators
Led spots
HID head lights
Starcom
Side stand enlarger
Bagster tank cover
Led rear light
Screen extender

Am thinking of trading it in for a 1200 GSA but not sure what kind of price to expect as either a trade in or a private sale??

Any opinions honest or pi@@ taking much appreciated.

Cheers marlou:thumby:

I sold a very clean one with goodies, about two years ago for 3500... and only 36000 miles. Private sale. I had it advertised slightly higher for a few months so when someone offered I accepted. As with everything, motivation plays a big part. I did take off the spot though and no HID. The extras were in a box (new discs, pads, filters etc).

Somebody got a bloody bargain!!

Ooh, that someone wasn't you :D

You won't get the best price on a trade. Might be worth a try to get the right salesman on the right day but I doubt it. Have you got the old parts? That might make a difference. JJH

As someone without a vested interest I am generally surprised at the prices they are advertised for.. I'm in the market for a road bike of moderate (cheap :D) cost and for £2500 I can buy Versys, VStrom, TDM etc of a much newer vintage than a GS. I know I'm comparing apples with oranges but given the OP's bike at the suggested £4k or an 18 month old XT660Z I'll look at the latter first.

Of course having never ridden a GS of any capacity I may be missing the point entirely

Yes you are totally missing the point. At the moment 1150 GSAs are going up in value. Having riden one and most other gs models I can tell you that they are probly the most comfortable bike ever made. Notice I did not say best. Just comfortable mile munching for mile after mile and still perferd over the 1200 by many. Ride one and see. At £4000 it looks like a steal. JJH

Accepting I'm missing the point, £4k for a twelve year old 43000 miler is not a steal. Value perhaps for those in the know but far from a bargain

EDIT: I'm interested enough to respond so perhaps I should give one a try - finding one to test ride that isn't someone's pride and joy with no guarantee of wanting to purchase is the issue

I think you will find that people who buy 1150GSAs are not looking for a bargain. They are looking for a good 1150GSA. And they know what they want. If you want a bargain historically the best time to buy is around December. You don't seem to want a 1150GSA. You seem to be looking for a bargain. Not any specific bike. Just a bargain. JJH

Keep the 1150!

Yeah possibly the 1200 are lighter faster etc etc

But unless you have a shedload of tools and presses and vices and big fcuk off torque bars you can;t fix the bastardin final drive! and it will cost you approx £300 or more depending on what is required

"in most instances" you could do the 1150 at the side of the road for about £75 inc 200cc of gear oil and if you can't you can "usually" limp to somewhere with it!

On a plus for the 1200's

Most of the heads have dropped off the valves now
Fuel pump controllers have mostly been replaced
As have the "immobiliser" antennae

Some may be on their 3rd front cover as they melt faster than the witch on the wizard of Oz and there wasn't even salt in that water!

Aye. Depends what clean means, but should be worth 4k ish IMHO.

A dealer will offer you sub 3k I'd guess.

3 1/2 years ago offered under £2000 for an immaculate 40,000 mile 1999 r1150 gs with extras against a new £12,500 gsa,
Last year offered £6,000 for the 2011 r1200gsa (3 years old , 14,000 fsh , immaculate with new tyres and panniers ) against a new r1200gsa lc .

STAY AWAY FROM DEALERS AND SELL IT PRIVATE

That's taking the piss, especially for the 2011 TwinCam GSA:blast

Point taken - I'm gone (Till I ride one of the buggers anyway)

Go ride one, seriously.

You need a couple of hours at least, especially if you've never been on a big GS before as you say.....it will take a bit to settle in and forget that it's very different to other bikes you've ridden.

Then, you'll start grinning, and then you'll understand :beerjug:

As for the OP bike, without piccies, 4 grand is what I'd expect to see it for.......a bit more if it's in great condition, a bit less if it's furred up and nasty :)

My 54 plate 1150gsa with 36k miles is a 5k bike all day long, but it is very clean and well appointed with extras. Anybody looking for the right 1150adv would be very happy to have it. Yes there are cheaper, but few as nice. I'm not selling it though :D
