Just come back from a 2 week trip to Scotland - not really a bike holiday so only did about 250 miles whilst up there but took the scenic route up and some of the way back.

Spent some time on Mapsource planning and pulling the route around until it looked interesting - worked a treat.

Found some excellent roads in the Peak District and the Dales (e.g. B6160 but quite busy) but one road on the trip came as close to my own personal idea of biking Nirvana as I think I will ever find.

Step forward the B729. It runs from the A76 just North of Dumfries to Kirkland followed by a short stretch on the A702 (no slouch of a road itself) and then from Moniaive to Carsphairn where it joins the A713.

Found it on the way up and then made sure I went back that way.
Very attractive and varied countryside, loads of bends; many quite open; no traffic (saw 3 cars on the way up and 6 on the way back). The only things to watch out for are the sheep particularly on the moorland section and the odd gravel patch.

Just something about it - can you fall in love with a road? :o

Recommending a road in Scotland is about as pointless as recommending a sweet in the pick n mix shop.
Just stay clear of the major built up areas and ride!
You won't be disappointed.

Scottish roads really aren't very interesting at all. You're much better staying off at home and riding the Cat 'n' Fiddle or going to North Wales.

HTH.......:)

Here Here! I get about 3 or 4 bike trips a year. I take the ferry from Norn Iron to Scotland and am so pushed for time I always head North and then West. Lochaber, Skye and Ullapool.

I so wish I had the time to head South and try out the Cat & Fiddle or Wales..... you guys are so lucky!

Maybe someday:green gri

Scotland

I've only had the pleasure of two long w/end breaks in Scotland (1st on my 12GSA, 2nd on my Blackbird) and I loved every single mile and bend that we did. We were blessed with sunshine and a group of local lads to show us the way round. You know who are. Fantastic.

Try the A702 continuation through the Dalveen Pass - just watch the sheep.

Or the road up to wanlockhead and the lead mining museum.:beerjug:

Be carful on that Dalveen pass:blast

I ended up being upside down looking at the sky on my GS1150 a few year ago (nice ditch thou)

Going down the Dalveen its the tight left hander near the bottom:pullface

Agree completely. Not worth coming up this way, and empty roads are really quite boring:rolleyes:;):P:toungincheek:rolleyes:

Please stay away!!

I am lucky enough/sorry,i meant unlucky enough to be in Scotland on a regular basis on both 2 wheels and 4(at different times for all the smartarses:D) and can honestly say you stay south of the "Welcome to Scotland" sigh at the top of the M6.

Scotland:nah, its full of traffic,is all built up,its full of traffic cops(especially the highlands, borders, dumfries & galloway etc etc,oh and scottish people as well :oonyack(fantastic, sorry, horrible people:augie:augie) so im sure you would have a better time in the peak district, lake district or wales.

Wherever you go,please enjoy and ride safe:aidan:

Cat and Fiddle ... forget it, just hairpins. If you're in the area go for the A54 Buxton to Congleton over the Wildboarclough ... GS territory :thumb

North Wales forget it ... full of part timers, crotch rockets, police, cameras and ambulances

Mid Wales :thumb

Can I just say that if you know a good road (not directed at you SB) then keep Schtum () about it! Take yer friends there by all means, but broadcast it and the following month it will be full of errr mmm part timers, crotch rockets, police, cameras and ambulances;)

Cant agree more Mickey, i have a mate who took me to the middle of nowhere there, couldn't find it again on me own mind, but here's a piccy, real GS country...(although i was on the RT, few scary moments!!)

Fort William to Mallaig is a real roller coaster of a road, with a new surface most of the way. Generally very quiet too.
