I have covered about 1k miles on my new RT and have the offside oil seal failure... I have ordered the parts, prepared myself for the couple of hours of buggering about to change it which doesn't seem a big deal... Is there some special monkey piss special additive that makes Castrol Syntax the ONLY oil for the job or will any 75-90 fully synth do...? I work in an autostore so have stuff such as MVMTF 75 90 fully synth on the shelf...

The bike has been a pampered queen before me and now is a daily commuter so may not have readjusted... The FD's seems to be the main bugbear of the R12 but the rest of the bike is spot on for what I need so I am 4/5ths expecting a new seal to work fine as there is no play...

Oddly, play was reported by an indie BM bloke on the last service and the Vines had it for the fuel pump recall and said there was nothing to report with the FD... There is nothing I can feel so it may even be a potential cash cow for some garages out there...

If anyone know the cost of a rebuild by someone like SED then that would help for the future...

Oh dear.

1st the rear suspension, now an oil seal. That's a worry. How many miles has the bike done? ...and .....

What's an "FD" please?

Ta,

Dave

FD = Final Drive. Do not think he's talking about a new LC bike, I read it as 1000 miles new to him.

Cant be a LC. They only get ridden in dry weather, with paint and gearbox issues or vibrations. And its a daily commuter. Sorry, no answer on Oil though

I have 5 bikes totalling approx. £12k... Deffffinately not an LC... My 07 RT might make the deposit...:)

Semi or fully...? It's not a prob getting fully synth, just a bit of a PIA getting Castrol Syntrax...

Don't put semi gl4 , in the fd ,,,,you need fully snth gl5,
80 90 gl5 is more readily available at motor stores and unlikely to be an issue in uk temperatures,
Roamer,,

You need to have a conversation with mikeyboy of this parish who is a FD. overhaul expert :thumb2

the cost to rebuild a 1200 FD is £350,this includes ALL bearings, seals,o'rings and casing bolts.
it also includes return postage to uk mainland.
if the paralever bearings need replacing, its about another £45.
i can also have the casing powder coated while its apart if needed
heres a link to a recent rebuild thread i posted on the ABR forum

Are you sure this is GL5? MVMTF 75 90 fully synth

I would get the Syntrax for both the gearbox and FD.

MVMTF is GL4 ,as far as I know, so not suitable.

You want this http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-737-castrol-syntrax-longlife-75w-90-formerly-saf-xo-75w-90.aspx

or an equivalent.

Well spotted guys... Never noticed that before as we sell oil more by "recommended" by manufacturer than anything... That's the prob with the world of cars... There are many vehicles that still require GL4 due to material issues with GL5...

I will get onto our Castrol folk to see what's what and if not Opie oils who seem great but 3rd party suppliers for small amounts are a bit of a PIA for remote locations such as Shetland... Can be done OK but whatever way we get it, it costs more...

Cheers:thumb

Good reply and one that I will follow up if the FD situation "escalates"... I am fairly pragmatic in knowing that there are build issues with them and its the R12 weak spot but someone who knows what they are doing and has good recommendations is worth filing for later...:thumb

I count it as a bit 50/50 with a R12 used bike and something you have to factor in...

Sorted for Syntrax...Good old suppliers and a good price too... Thanks to all the replies...

Well I got around to fixing the leaking seal and it wasn't much of a problem... Approx 2 hours with the usual buggering about with new bolts and fiddly bits... The FD oil was a bit 2nd hand and was an ugly looking dark yellow (no metal shards) which shows that regular changes are not to be sniffed at... What was funny as well was I put in 180ml as per updated instructions but on measuring old stuff I found only 140ish... It had not leaked much for me so it may have been a bit short anyway...

Things are fine at the mo and I will keep an eye on it with regular changes... My inexpensive bottle of Syntrax will last 5 changes or 30 k miles at 6 k intervals...
