The symptom – a loudish scraping sound (similar to the sound to when you press the starter button when the engine is running) but only after I have released the starter button when starting the engine - It only started this afternoon but only seems to do it when the engine is cold. Does anybody know what is could be? And if it is a major or minor problem.

Thanks Russ – Battery is new – installed an odyssey over the summer. Could the starter motor be hanging/catching?? Is it a common problem?

Could the starter motor be hanging/catching?

That was my thought.

I had a 2 valve twin that developed this kind of problem. IF I remember correctly the battery was low and the gear on the starter motor wasn't being moved forward with enough power to engage the flywheel fully.

Check your battery anyway. Just because it's new.................

Russ.

I think Ritchie is right. The fan belt does scream when the engine is cold, on some bikes.

Could be that it's getting worn.

By the way, it's referred to as a fan belt by BMW, don't know why!

Mick.

Thanks guys – Bike went for a 12K service to Vines – they know of the problem and they will sort if out – or so they said.

I had this problem last winter!

Turned out to be a sticky starter switch!

Awlfull noise!!

Discovered lights wouldn't work either when it was doing it!

Left the bike for 1/2 an hour and it started no problems at all??

:beerjug:

Thanks for that will try switch first and then starter motor. Mine just makes graunching noise on start up when cold. Sounds orrible but the thing keeps going!
