So...
...took the 1150GS (MY - 2000) for a thrash to warm her up.
Put on centre stand and run for a while as I do throttle body balance.
All done - look down and find this under the bike.

Here's the quiz:

Q1. What is it?
Q2. Why is it there now?
Q3. What did I do with it? (n.b. - what did I do with it - not what would an even vaguely competent mechanic do with it)

BTW - I know the answers to all 3 questions.

I'm just offering you all something to do while you self isolate/self abuse/contemplate the ruin of your business.

1) Exhaust Cat Converter mount bolt ?

2 and 3 No real idea except you tried to nip it up or you were trying to remove it and went the wrong rotation

Dr Farkoff has nailed Q1 - it's a collector box mounting bolt.

So - on to Q2. Bearing in mind I have never touched these bolts in 3 years of ownership can you work out why it came out now? :D

Ok it's too lovely out to be sitting hear writing this toss. I'm off for a ride to Whiteways.

Answers:

Q2 - the bolt head is only exposed when the centre stand is down. I reckon it was sheared when I bought it but the centre stand has kept it in place when I'm riding. Vibration from bike whilst sat on centre stand having TB's balanced finally allowed it to worm it's way out while the centre stand was down and so not restraining it.

Q3 - covered it in Loctite and pushed it back in the hole. Will attempt to extract the rest of it on a dull day.

Thanks for all your efforts. xx

Don’t worry about. BMW stopped fitting them to their later 1150 models.

Q3; Just stumbled across this - just to note it wasn’t me...

Oh and can I buy my GS back?

Exhibit 1. from the Michael Barrymore pool party.

Same happened many years ago to my 2000 MY 1150, but it looked wrong having a hole there and it flexed a little on the centrestand so a neighbour offered to take the exhaust part into his BAe workshop. He drilled out the end bit that had snapped off in there, and then made/installed a threaded insert and even made a new bolt for me. A great guy...

It probably came from the factory that way!

Serious about buying back?
Maybe sometime.

Bike's done good work up the Swiss alps and round bits of Europe & UK

Great to hear it’s been travelling - and yes, if you were selling it, I would consider taking it back. Slight moot point perhaps being the ULEZ here in London. Although I managed to have my old Funduro emission tested ok...

1150 models can get exemption from TFL for the ULEZ, no costs involved . Do a search and the very simple procedure is explained

Hi Neil, good to know - I thought that BMW only had the CoC for later models, 2002-on or so.

Cheers,

J
