Just been on the phone to Devitt, and this is what they had to say.

All old policies were coverred under churchhill underwriters and probably were coverring the various accessories. But they have been since last July, changing over all new and renewal policies over to NIG underwriters. NIG are the underwriters who will not cover any product which they consider a performance product. All renewal policies from July this year will be with NIG. :(

So could any of you guys check your policies, to see who the underwriter is? If you have a policy with BMW and the underwriter is NIG and you have written confirmation from the Insurer that your silencer is coverred, could you please contact me ASAP.

Thanks.

I just checked my policy and it's underwritten by Churchill, which may explain why I'm covered for my can.

Laughingbob, I think your very lucky, as you have said, you have Churchhill underwriter`s. When your renewal is due, make sure you check with them again, as I have explained in the above post, this will change in July.

Looks like I will get no joy from either BMW or Devitt, so come September I will be Insurring with another who will cover my Renus silencer. :(

My renewal is due in July and will I probably change to Carol Nash. It seems a bit daft to spend in excess of 10K on a bike and then protect it with a second rate insurance. I foolishly thought that BMW would endorse a first rate, competent company to provide insurance services. I waited four and a half months for my initial insurance documents and then details were wrong. Having said that, I pointed out another error I noticed yesterday and the new documents arrived today, so maybe things are improving but, it would have been nice if the details had been correct in the first place.

I have marked 3 items, the Autocom intercom system, the Öhlins front & rear suspension and the ICOM bike to bike radio as ‘not covered by policy’ in response to your letter of 4th December 2002. [/i]

Mike, why isn't the autocom covered? I've got a new one on mine and I'd be pretty p*ssed if I couldn't claim for it.

What I found a bit strange was that, having asked about my exhaust I then asked if my GPS was covered. They said that the unit was not covered if stolen from the bike but, was covered if it were stolen at the same time as the bike.

On the original proposal, I gave them a full list and they declined to cover these particular items. I had the choice of accepting that cover or not - which is quite reasonable - it's a free market after all.

I decided it was OK - if the bike was nicked then the Autocom would be lost - otherwise it was invisible to the casual thief (buried deep in the tool tray, along with the Icom). They agreed to replace the Ohlins with OE shocks (which, believe it or not, are more expensive than Ohlns :D) if they were damaged. Oddly, the GPS was covered, even though it was on display ...:nenau

If you haven't checked whether something's covered or not - it probably isn't...

Mike:)

Similar circumstances occured when the BWM insurance changed from Red Star Equity Direct to I think Churchill's.

I was offered a renewal by Churchill's and before accepting I decided to go through my claims history with the new company as a precaution. It was just as well because Churchill's would not accept my circumstances even though I had declared everything to the previous company

If I had accepted the renewal as described then they could have reduced or rejected any future pay-out.

New company = Usually a new contract. Check all details.

BMW (Devitt) for me.

I have just renewed my insurance changing (reluctantly) from CN to BMW (Devitt underwritten by NIG) on my GS12.

Not got an aftermarket can (yet) but have got the luggage and SatNav. fitted.

The pricing was significantly different- £250 with BM and £373 with CN. and BM include £500 for your gear too (not a bean from CN any more).

All the other stuff was there abouts between them though BM was a bit better on all particularly the excess (250 v 400).

All this and I'm in the middle of a major claim right now so reduced to 3 years ncd.

Boring stuff I know but am I glad of it right now.

Skippy.

BM Cover (underwritten by NIG)

Just renewed the above, sent letter similar to MikeO's - got a phone call saying theyed contacted underwriters & there would be a 15% increase to cover all the mods - Ohlins, Autocom,2610, Remus Y (but original can) etc ...etc...etc.

Anyway 15% hike still only gave a total cost of £218 so perfectly happy there.

Just hoping I won't have to test their efficiency in a claim.

Hi Ade, have pm`d you concerning above.

Paul.

Paul,

Spoke to Devitt today as, though my policy is now a NIG one, the booklet was for Churchill.

They said Churchill and NIG are both owned by RBS and there was NO difference between the policies; RBS just wanted all the policies under one roof. They said the ONLY difference (and here's the rub perhaps!) for the insured was dealing with a different claims department.

Not much help but, if Churchill covered Remus and Devitt say there was no intention or actual change, then NIG should also cover it - In principle of course; practice may differ. ;)

If its any help....I fitted an after market road legal exhaust to my old Blade. The insurence stance was that if it was damaged, due to an accident/theft, then they would only replace it with the original honda item (which cost twice as much!?). Either way, the insurance company would need to prove that the exhaust/other mods was a contributary factor to the accident/theft etc in the event of a claim. Highly unlikely, as the addition of an exhaust often only raises the power output to that of the manufacturers over inflated claims.

EXCELLENT SERVICE

Got my renewal in the post the other day and was a bit concerned after reading the various posts so I followed Mike 'O's tip and sent them a complete list of all the accessories fitted including Y-piece and autocom.
Phone call this morning from the luvly lady at BM Insurance, everything covered under the policy andno change to premium , letter of confirmation in post.
Just for info I have class 1 business use on the policy and protected no claims with £250 excess, all for the grand sum of £153.00

how much?

I've just got my insurance through today - they are valuing my '99 1100GS at £7000 and are asking for £492.65. No Garage and living in London (a nice bit of SW17)........ You lot have it lucky! though I must get them to change the valuation.....maybe that will help.

Renewed mine today and they had all the mods on file no problem at all.

:D :D

- they are valuing my '99 1100GS at £7000 and are asking for £492.65

"valuation" is spurious unless it is a "agreed valuation" since when it comes to a claim for total loss the payment will be based on "market value" and that involves at least two very different points of view...............

To shedracer

please dont think im being a smart a,,e but in your posting you keep using GS1200 or RT1200 is your mate confusing the insurers by saying the same to them the models are R1200RT and R1200GS im not being smart but make sure your mate is using the the proper model prefix it may help with the insurance companies because the people they have on the phones these days know b...er all about bikes let alone the model prefixs so treat them as though you are talking to children and be as crystal clear as poss

Hi all,
Glad to see some of you are getting cover for your bits. I unfortunately am not so lucky, Devitt still wont cover my Remus Silencer. They don`t have a problem with the Wilbers shocks I have fitted though. :(

I have explained to Devitt more times than I dare mention, about all you guys who do get cover, and still I get the same old response, "NIG, the underwritters will not give cover if performance exhaust is fitted".

Concerning the model prefix, myself and the guys with the R1200RT`s gave the correct "model prefix".

When my insurance comes up for renewal, I`ll be going else where, me thinks.
