Sooooo, I'm in the right kakky job-wise and I'm applying for new jobs all over. I've a job interview in Edinburgh in a couple of weeks time. Nice company, good folks, interesting job (if I get it, a big 'if' as the competition will be strong!), right in the centre of the city.

Long way for me & Mrs BLL to move, all the way from sunny Herts, leaving family and friends behind and all that. But the idea of living in Scotland is proper exciting :D . So we're having a big think about it. One thing I can't get my head around is house prices and commuting options, as I don't know Edinburgh at all.

I need a house with a garage for the various bikes. On the coast would be nice, but not essential. Both Mrs BLL and I would need to commute into the centre of Edinburgh every day for work, not bothered how (train, car, bike (for me), bus...). Looking to buy a place. Schools don't matter, no kids to worry about.

Has anyone got any advice on areas to look at? Any 'have a gander at this general area' thoughts very welcome!!

Farmer Palmer could lend you a shed perhaps, at his gaff

Edinburgh is a beautiful city IMHO, from the brief visits I've made and always feels a 'bit of a foreign adventure' when I go:thumb

Lucky you.

Look on Rightmove for properties in the area.

Good road and rail links and some lovely areas to live.

Good luck and hope you get the job!

Hello there,
If you're looking for somewhere on the coast then Port Seton and Longniddry are quite nice. Both easy for the bypass towards town. Nearer the city, Musselburgh is right on the boundary with the town, then Joppa and Portobello are both areas within the city that have nice coastal views.
South Queensferry is worth a look, that's nearer to the Forth Bridge.
If you do start serious house hunting, let me know the areas you're looking at and I'll do my best to assist with details.
Good luck with the job, and let me know if you fancy a spot of biking when you get here.

Have a look at the Edinburgh Solicitors Property Centre site here:

http://www.espc.com/

There are various 'commuter' towns around Edinburgh - Kirkliston, Linlithgow, South Queensferry, Bo'Ness, Bathgate, Livingston and so on. I'm afraid commuting into Edinburgh by road is a bit of a nightmare and I'd advise you to get somewhere that has good public transport links. 'Park & Ride' schemes are springing up around the area and they are very convenient.

I have a daughter in South Queensferry, which is a nice little town, but remember we are about to start building the second Forth Road Bridge there.

My other daughter is in Bo'Ness - which is considered a bit 'down market' by Edinburgh folk - but there are some nice houses there and I think its worth a look.

There are popular commuter towns in Fife - such as Dalgety Bay and Burntisland but the cost of commuting has to be balanced with the lower house prices these days.

If you get the job (good luck with it :thumb) its probably worth renting a place to start with as it will let you get a feel for the surrounding area before committing to somewhere.

It may be a Capital City, but Edinburgh is quite small - population around 500,000 - with easy access to the great outdoors. The Central Belt has always been Industrialised but North & South has wide open spaces.

Its a good place to be (I moved here from Somerset in 1972) :thumb

Bob.

Transport links (public & road) are best if you are living to the West or East.

I live in the Borders (South of Embra) and have a 25 mile commute each way. For much of the year I do that on the bike. Otherwise it's the bus, car or park & ride. It's a pain in the winter when I'm not on the bike, but I love living in the Borders. Plus there's the vague hope that they'll deliver on the Borders rail link and I'll be able to get the train a mile and a half from my house ... in a few years time.

Good luck.

Unless you intend commuting by bike or (expensive) public transport, I'd stay clear of Fife beyond Dalgetty Bay area. The road into Edinburgh for a 09:00 start is a nightmare.

Get a place on the tram line

If there's any fog / snow / ice / melting roads then the Forth bridge seems to get hit with queues. And as for the ring road  nobody uses the inside lane apart from the 1st and last 100 yards.

All depends on the budget you are looking at. South Queensferry, Kirkliston are a couple of good value areas NW & W of Edinburgh at present, but into the Borders is certainly worth looking at. :flag

Yes, you'll save a fortune if you move to Dalgety Bay. No need to put the lights on at night as the place glows in the dark.

Have a shuftie here ..

The market is very slow in Embra at the moment so you may be able to pick and choose. Renting is a good option for flexibility of course, until you see summat you like.

Post again and I'm sure the Jocks will provide their usual level of support and mickey taking of potential FEBs:P

Don't worry about being called an FEB. FEB's show a greater love for Scotland then most of us who live here. They chose to live here while we just can't find the way out. Remember to move here in time to register to vote in any referendum. The more votes we can muster against fat Eck,s daft idea to cut off our funding stream from south of the border the better.

Now if he would only campaign to break away from Europe we might have to improve the road links to England to cope with the rush from the south. Only the Scots could be thinking about ditching traditional alliances in favour of a stronger alliance with an institution that is tearing itself apart.:flag

I was having a laugh btw!

Hello,
Thanks very much for all the advice, website links and good luck wishes, appreciated. :D :thumb2

Agree that the best thing to do is rent for a while at the start - as well as getting a better feel for the area, I need to make sure I'm happy with the job too. I just need to get a bit of a feel that a move is do-able with a few options, without crippling ourselves with a monster mortagage.

Don't worry about FEB piss-taking! I'm expecting it, no Timmy's Rules on this thread. :D

Will be a home-coming of sorts for Mrs BLL. Her parents are from Blairgowrie and Alyth :flag

Will check out the espc website and some estate agent websites. (Then all I've got to do is get the job :comfort .)

Dunbar - for all the right reasons.

Dunbar is a lovely seaside town. It has received a considerable amount of investment recently from both builders and Asda, with a fairly new store.

My mate lives in Dunbar and he commutes to Edinburgh by train everyday. The route is the main line from London to Edinburgh. He works at the New Royal Infirmary to the south of the city and has had no real transport issues more than anyone else.

The schools are good, there is an active community and the weather is mild.

From a biking point of view there is easy access to the roads of the Scottish Borders and Northumbria, even North Yorks is not that far. The coast roads and back roads between Dunbar and the rest of Scotland can be great fun too.

There are beaches, golf courses, rugby clubs and some very nice eateries, including a hotel called the Rock, which has an excellent menu.

Apart from my mate living in Dunbar and having sampled the aforementioned fayre I have no connection with Dunbar and am promoting it purely because it deserves it.

Best of luck on the job front and the house search.

Plenty of property in the Borders, If you need a rental cottage I have a few customers with places to rent. Borders rail link (in a couple of years) to the city and empty roads.
