The GPS section is popular and sees a good amount of frequently very useful and / or interesting posts.

From time to time we have a tidy-up of the section, not least as things move on. I am wondering if it’s time to have another. If so, how might bods like to see it done?

My suggestions are:

A. Sort out the Garmin device section / sub-sections. Garmin (and to a lesser extent TomTom) used to dominate the market, with umpteen devices, often just known by a number. Without a doubt Garmin’s popularity is on the slide but, unlike a BlackBerry is not yet dead. Maybe retain the XT and XT2 devices (as they are both relatively new and definitely different devices from each other) but move Garmin Zumo 346-396 into the ‘Older devices’. sub-section.

B. Retain the MapSource and BaseCamp sections but perhaps combine them, in rather the same way as ‘Older devices’ is divided.

C. The Montana device seems to be the ‘go to’ choice for off-road device based navigation. Should it have its own section, just as say the XT and XT2 devices do? Or, might it be better to create a fresh sub-section, simply titled ‘off-road’ to cater for anything off-road, whether it be device or mapping? I think I favour the latter as it’s fairly niche and those that do a lot of off-roading generally know what they are talking about, so it can sort of run and moderate itself perhaps?

D. Set up something for Beeline, maybe?

E. Have a general tidy-up of the rest. Retaining (as opposed to archiving) most but perhaps reorganising the sections a bit.

Reorganisation does take a bit (sometimes a lot) of moving about but it does work. I think the tidied-up Travel section and its better presented sub-sections proves that. I am happy to talk with Paul to see what can / should be done but would like to hear from others too, please. To this end, please add any suggestions to this thread over the next month, we can then see what might or might not be popular and / or possible.

Thank you.

Richard

I think all of your observations and suggestions make sense

Do It ! 👍

A lot if sense in your ideas.

That Garmin with the XT and certainly the XT2 moved away from the well known logics does mean that they require their own sections as you've wisely seen. Maybe have a cut-off of more than 10 years old = not its own section?

Regarding the Beeline, is there enough usage on the site for its own section?

I am wondering the same.

By the same token, aweness grows interest. If you build it, they will come. I’ve found the same when I’ve cut questions and comments out of unrelated threads, which are otherwise lost, most often in totally unrelated threads.

PS This was one take on the date order of Garmin’s automotive products. Lord only knows if it’s correct, as I doubt if even Garmin remember.

Garmin.

Apparently, the very popular 660 was way back in 2006. That’s very nearly an entire generation ago, in human terms.

A section for MRA ? People always looking for help

With respect and forgive my ignorance a gpx file library would be fantastic. Ridden routes with poi’s, mileage, info etc all partitioned into geographical locations. I’ve used some of the Ride ones from their site which worked out really well. Believe it would benefit a lot of members with trip planning/ annual tour etc. Oh and a unicorn 🦄 regards :thumby:

Regarding the Beeline, is there enough usage on the site for its own section?

they have a relatively new version which seems to be gaining traction as it has more functionality

as people with older bikes without inbuilt carplay move away from Garmin/Tomtom then they are going to look for a cheap and easy way to use navigation on a phone without attaching the actual phone to the bike. Beeline will do this at a price and modest learning curve that some might find attractive, compared to say an MRA subscription (separate planner and satnav apps) and Chigee type device.

What’s MRA? I guess MyRoute App?

There is already two separate MyRoute sections. They were split into two, when MyRoute made their big revamp, to hopefully differentiate between the navigation app and its Cloud based route creation sibling. I wouldn’t propose combing them back together or deleting them.

many are already embedded within trip reports or shared on request if you post in the trip planning section

We had that for a long time but it fizzled out, with all but zero traffic for several years. With Paul’s agreement it was closed down, the posts within it moved (where possible) appropriately.

What does work though, is adding GPX files to Trip Reports and in the Travel section in general. Given the ease by which, for example, MyRoute files can be made public and shared, this still seems to be the way to go, not least as the Travel section is now very much more regional.

A seperate section for phone/tablet devices running navigation apps would seem sensible to me. Although there's already a lot of sub sections and one for tablets.

Perhaps a section for the Chigee/capuride devices.

Perhaps a section for the Chigee/capuride devices.…

We set up a section for ‘tablets’ specifically and another to cater for the rise of the Chigee type ‘mirroring’ devices as a whole. I wouldn’t propose killing these off, unless there is a better way?

I’d like to see a Beeline section, but I don’t know how much hassle it is to create

Quick question.

Does tablets need to be combined with Chigee etc? I don’t use either, so I have no idea. That said, I’ve always imagined them to be distinct from each other.

As a part of a reorganisation, it’s maybe not too hard to create. Paul and son, will know. What does take time is then shifting posts into the new section(s) but that only has to be done once by one of the galley slaves.

What a good guess.
