A Shocked TMF

Interesting thread and good to see the reaction and response from dealer and BMW. I had exactly same issue with my 4 year old GS LC. FSH and immaculate. Paid £45 for dealer to confirm the problem and asked them to raise 'good will' claim with BMW - came back rejected. Told £1800 new part and that a replacement eBay part would throw up an error and using FireFox to rebuild was unreliable in their experience.

During the process, I spoke to the three main dealers in the South East and was pretty much fobbed-off.

After a few weeks of trying to figure a solution, I took the shock out myself and sent it to FireFox to rebuild. Then replaced myself and all resolved. Initially, very p*ssed with BMW brand but the silverlining is that it forced me to find another solution and work on the bike myself. I'm now more confident that I can probably find a solution if sh*t happens. It's easy to get scare mongered into selling or taking out extended warranty but there is always another way...

Arhhh so this brings me back to the "is it tmf vlogger" that got special treatment ?
I think so as i said i wont hold my breath that if that happened to me they would sort it out! shame but way of the world

No but it is a stated piece of admission of fault, so if you keep this thread, you keep the video. If it does go to court, its pretty good admission that BMW are at fault.

Not wanting to wade through 17 pages so I apologise if this has been covered elsewhere.
My rear shock has just been replaced at 23,600 miles through the 2 year warranty offered by BMW on a 2nd hand bike bought from them. 3 months before it runs out.

Does the extended warranty limit of 30,000 miles relate to the mileage of the shock or the bike?

If mine goes, and it is still fine after near 23k, I shall have it refurbished at Firefox Racing in Keighley.

Thanks for that.

Bike ..... if you made a contribution toward the repair (however small) then the 2 year Parts Warranty would remain with you

If you didn't, then the new shock will have a warranty of 6400 miles or to the end of the extended warranty period whichever is sooner

And paying the excess on an extended warranty claim does not count as making a contribution, which is really b*llox as you are contributing cash for the repair.

No you're not .... You're paying an excess of £100, £50 or ZERO

Absolutely. The BMW warranty is an insured warranty and the excess figure is an insurance excess to reduce the premium, not a contribution to the parts and labour bill.

So Firefox will repair an ESA shock for 199/249, surely nobody would pay 1800 for a new unit then ?

Depends whether the pre-load motor is still working or the stepper does to adjust the damping...

Almost as cringing as not being able to spell "write" properly.

Don’t be unnecessarily harsh. Someone emailed me the other day “call me when yogurt a chance” and I texted my wife once before asking “is it guaranteed?” and somehow my autocorrect said “is that gay rented?”

How was the Firefox "experience" ?

Getting FireFox to rebuild was very smooth for me. They used like-for-like parts from old BMW shocks they buy from the dealers (they do offer upgrade builds too). Overall took about 2 weeks for them to rebuild and send back. The main challenge will be you have to take the shock off the bike and send it to them. So the bike will be on stands while you wait patiently.

While it worked for me, one dealer mentioned they had a few issues with rebuilt FireFox shocks and then you're stuck with trying to resolve the situation. As a few people have mentioned, the alternative is to buy a used shock but it's still a gamble...

For those that need to know you can ask him directly about his shocking experience :D

Now that could be interesting. TMF has been open and transparent thus far and his credibility score massively improved. Let’s hope that continues.

I don't think that watching a chubby middle aged bloke on youtube on Valentines night would go down well with the Mrs!:D

Having had a rear ESA unit fail , it did not leak oil externally and showed no visible sign of having gone t*ts up, however it had lost damping , was misbehaving and losing internal pressure on the preload side and dropping from highest to lowest setting.

If a punter presents a franchised main dealer with their bike and an E Bay bought replacement shock they want fitted the dealer will be unable to say that it is any better than the original until it is fitted and test ridden, if he wanted the used shock fitted he should have either done it himself or got a non franchised dealer to do so.

No main dealer will be happy about fitting used parts as even if they make it plain that they cannot guarantee the parts safety they can still be held responsible it it suffers a major failure.

It is the same reason as when we used to pop our works vehicles into a franchised dealer for minor warranty work they would do a full safety check on it, had they not bothered and the van suffered a major failure ie brakes (something nothing to do with the waranty) they could still be held responsible for allowing it out of their premises.

Blame the litigation culture we live in today.

In my case my dealer has always been extremely helpful in dealings with BMW UK, however, had I not had the extra years warranty despite the bike having covered only 14,000 miles I would have had to foot the bill and BMW would have said it was 11 montths out of the standard 2 year warranty

Mine went at the same mileage last summer. I too had the extended warranty so only paid a £100 excess. The dealer had another GS of similar age but 2 months out of warranty and they said BM had covered the cost minus £100 in that case.
