As I have naff all to do at the mo, I thought I would bore you all with my journey to a nice 1200 adventure. so here goes. I sold my 1150 GS last year, having had for some years , the 1200 model was lighter and faster. Bought one from a tosser on this site and and it was in great nick it was fitted with those Avon st storms. I changed into a corner seeking nutter at every oportunity, I know lots have been said about tyres on this site, but the grip from these was fantastic. Enjoyed every minute on the thing going miles out of my way to go anywhere. It all got so silly I even took time off from work to play. But like all good things there is something that takes the pleasure and steals your fun. The damn thing started conking out. water in that fuel tank thingy was I thought the probelm, but there were other issues that I would not wish to make a song and dance about here.No warranty 6k worth of bike .. sod BMbloodyW. Go anywhwere as long as you could take a breakdown truck.
So I spyed a lovely varadero at the local Honda dealer. CJ Ball Chris is very good with test rides so I took it out for an hour only on the main roads. thought this is a good bike it's a Honda no probs there then. So we did a deal only to realise that I should have tried it on some country roads Balls up no 2 in the making.. My Mates Dave and Paul asked me to join them for a trip up to Baldeston BMW, as Paul wanted to sort some spots out for his 1200GS which incidently has had the 2 usual probs of ring thingy and the fuel controller although once changed all has been ok. Pauls bike has by the way covered 40k all over Europe and the south American tour with Kevin and Julia Sanders, that folks is another story, and a good one too. So Paul says follow me lads I know some really good back roads to Peterborough. Only good If you ride a GS (even an unreliable one) or have an arse with skin as thick as a Rino. By the time we got back to Norwich my butt was hurting so much I sat in the tub for 2hrs. A fortnight later I went to the Docs for a checkup thankfully no underlying probelms thank goodness. I mentions this to Little Dave who says yeah those new deros have been said to have really hard suspension. Suspension, says I, It feels as if I have been whacked in the crotch with a piece of 4*2. "Has it got any better then," say's Dave taking the P as usual "Can you F.. Function OK mate" Laughing his socks off. "Sell the bloody thing and buy a good bike". "Like what", says me, totally exasperated by motorbikes. "A GS Dave" ( that's me ) "A GS are you on something or what ", "Well Pauls bikes a good'un and you were always raving about how good they. Ther's always bad'un you were just unlucky.
Now I got to thinking maybe I ought to try a newer 1200. so I goes along to our new BMw here in Norwich and rides the demos note plural I spent a whole day riding their bikes they could'nt help me enough. I kept coming back to that GS Aventure on the coastal roads of Norfolk which have not changed much since the times of Pirates and a bloke called Turpin. the GS was the bike, what a difference. It was smoother, the ride was outstanding to the sheer pleasure of my butt and boy was it big. At 6ft 1in I was ok I could reach the floor . But that was last september and I bought a 57 plate ex BM staff bike (not from some bloke in wales called charlie).
So to end my yarn I have spec'ed the bike up it has not had a single issue to moan at and my love of GSers has been restored. All bikes have their probelms BMW are no exception. I have even gone out in the pouring rain and cold just to go for a ride-out. My excuss to the wife is I just want to go and see how the coastal erosion has changed 4hours later, contented, cold, covered in crap I am again a happy old Tosser:thumb:beerjug::clap. PS Oldrascals story prompted me to bore you with my ramblings. have a great summer all and stay safe Dave.
