A82 upgrade.

Sorry Tash, not convinced that’s true. All regular users of that road are wary of that stretch! Only because of the accidents that we see on a regular basis there. I dot know what’s wrong with the road in that section, the worst corner is about ½ a mile before there !!
Its probably a better biking road that anywhere on the A82. Just not on that wee bit. :nenau

Go sign the petition, please :thumb2

I see your point, but you could say that the majority of the A82 is acceptable, for example Glencoe. The only stretch I see as needing attention is Loch Lomond side, which is say 15 miles.
The only reason you don't have an issue with the A86 is because you know it like the back of your hand, what about the thousands of people who aren't familiar with it?

Can't see a whole lot wrong with the A82 as it stands, to be honest (unless I've forgotten a stretch? :nenau).

It still attracts me for a day out or a route north to Caithness, so I'd hate if it got upgraded in stretches to something akin to the A9 :(.

The A9 north of Tain has become increasingly sanitised over the years to make commerce more viable in the north of Scotland, which is good - I suppose, but as soon as I stick on a helmet................ my priorities change ;)

Try driving up there in a car or van or truck in summer when the touroids are out when you need to catch a plane or train or just get some work done...
The 'temporary' traffic lights on Loch Lomond side which have been there for thirty years along with the narrow road where trucks and buses get stuck 'cos there's no room to pass and they can't back up as there is a line of stupid tourists with caravans nose to tail....

It isn't fun and it isn't how a major trunk road should be.

Then there's the deaths....

Hang on............. this is a bike forum, and I did say that my priorities change when I get on the bike :nenau

If their plan is to partially dual-carriageway it - that brings as many problems as it solves... :(

It is usual for the folk at the commercial end of the route in question to look for better transport links on the basis that if they are looking for biking enjoyment - they can always head north/west for that.

In Fort William/Glencoe etc - you can find more roads that haven't been sanitised, by heading north.

Living in Edinburgh................ The A82 is my playground, not commercial route :eek

I'm biased of course............... perhaps you are too? :nenau

Edit - don't complain about tourists - they are one of your area's main incomes (Lochaber no more :augie)

All thats needed is for the road to be made the same width and standard all the way along- removing the crappy almost single track sections.
And I am biased - I live up here and need to use those roads to get to work- and to play on:D

What about another petition to ban buses and coaches :augie

That is an EXCELLENT plan:D:D:D:D:D

Feckin Highland Heritage and other coffin-dodger laden buses NEVER pull over to let the tail back behind them pass.
You'd think the auld fu ck er s would be in a hurry since they ain't got long left:nenau

Gordon, I dont see them spending billions on the whole road, just upgrading the crappy bits.
I think the Loch Lomond bit and double white lines the whole way to Fort Bill are indeed those referred to 'crappy bits'.
On that basis, I have signed and had no problems registering, even though I gave a Northern Ireland address.
In saying that, I near sh@t myself............. at first I thought you were wanting to upgrade my favourite road in the world, the A87!

Wot he said! I agree it needs upgrading in places but, wouldn't want to see it made into another A9.

This road is oft lamented as one of the best biking roads in Europe yet it is in a dangerous state of disrepair. Sections are regularly flooded, it is grossly inadequate for the volume and type of vehicles that use it, it has had temporary traffic lights in one place for more than 40 years ffs.
The route is of strategic importance for commerce, tourism and growth but the maintenance standards and plans for improvement are totally inadequate for modern needs.
The Scottish government needs to regard the A82 with far higher priority.
Petition here. Sign it please.
Done! :thumb

The last thing that I would want is another A9. :eek
I've done a bit more research into this to find out what improvements are being proposed.

What improvements have been funded and when will these works be completed?

The plan includes work at Pulpit Rock,(This is where the temp lights are) the Crianlarich Bypass and other minor widening by 2012. The programme for 2012 to 2017 includes sections from Tarbet to Inverarnan, Loch Tulla and some sections from Corran Ferry to Fort William.
There is a clear need for further improvement from Corran Ferry to Fort William (the Route Action Plan only includes 4 km) and on sections from Fort William to Inverness.

The real timing is much less certain, however, with only the first £16M of the £90M committed.

There are 3 times the number of Personal Injury Accidents per mile on the section of the road between Tarbet and Ardlui than on the average single carriage way road in Scotland.

More information here.

Healthy debate, I want to see the road improved, by this I mean widened in the appropriate places. Less flooding. Less potholes ( I was talking to a bus driver yesterday who told me about his rear suspension being torn and the backend seizing. Nothing coming the other way and he managed to stop. He had 34 passengers on at the time. It was a pothole that caused this!)
Remember a couple of years ago the road was closed between Tarbet and Crianlarich, traffic was diverted via Inveraray. That’s about another 90 mins !! Snow was to blame ! It broke overhanging branches and they blocked the road. The road was closed for 45 hours :blast I was caught out on my way home.
Why cant they cut back the branches before winter. That’s the sort of improvement I want to see and the budget needs to be allocated this year.
