Bugger! I knocked a footpump off my garage wall on to the tank of my month-old GS, taking out a big chunk of the topcoat (white primer's still there underneath).

A cack-handed attmept with touch-up paint has only made things worse. Anyone know of firms who could patch up the tank in situ rather than having to do a full - and horribly expensive - respray?

I'm in the north London area.

You could try someone like "Chipsaway" they are a franchise in most areas that off a mobile service removing stone chips and minor dents, I have used them on a couple of cars with good results.

Mr Grips,

bad luck. Look up 'Chips Away' in the local yellow pages & give them a ring. My neighbour used them to touch in some stone chips on his people carrier (dark metallic grey) and you couldn't tell it'd been repaired. He was also very cheap. He then re-touched some scratches on the pannier of my Pan (sorry Tim). Excellent job done for £25 or so (as I remember). Chips Away are a franchised company and you should have a guy near you (they come to you, at home or work). Worth trying - what colour?

thanks for the advice everyone. my gs is a kind of dull grey, I think the Bavarians call it "graphitan".

Hmmm - Graphitan, eh? They might have a problem matching the sheen of the semi-matt finish. Give them a try anyway.

Mr Grips,

Chips Away are the right people but I believe that they will require the paint code as they mix the paint up using a computerised system on their van.

Perhaps Bracknell can supply the code for you.

If you cant find a number for Chips Away, PM me as I live in NW London and have their card downstairs in my file. Their work is very good.

Good luck to you.

Noticing all these NW London GS owners - where are you in NW London?

How's about a ride out one day?

Perhaps a Baglux tank cover and some short term memory loss?

Or a matching chip on the other side, et voila. A custom paint job. And no need to worry about the next scratch. Develop it a little further and then enter it fot the Turner prize:)
