aarrggh!!!!! abs lights!!!

This is driving me up the wall, and haven't managed to find similar symptoms on search. My abs lights won't always reset on start - I switch the ignition on and they both blink simutaneously, most of the time they stay blinking after I've started the bike and reset (go off) at self test when I ride off. Occasionally as I start the bike, they either stay on or go into alternate flash mode. Most of the time I can restart the bike and they behave, but sometimes it takes several restarts. The battery is a new gel battery and volts are good, the starter motor appears to be ok, I've stripped & cleaned it and checked all magnets are there, and I've reset the abs system. The only thing I can think of now is that there may be a duff connection wherever the abs module senses it's voltage from at the start - I guess this is on the multiplug to the abs module. Or the module could be sh@gged.

Answers on a postcard please.......:confused::confused::confused:
 
MIne was doing the same...............answer..............turn the ignition on, wait till they flash 3 times then start the bike with the lights off.

If it still is a problem look at the battery. This usually happens when the battery is low and can't send enough power to the unit. Don't stress yet though as I doubt it's faulty (watch me be wrong now :blast).
 
when i had an abs model on loan, it happened to me, turned out it was because i was wheeling it out of the garage backwards. something which the abs unit doesn't like :rolleyes:
 
Thanks fellas, did think about the faulty battery, but I can only check it offload, and it's been about 12.8 volts so assume it's good. Would a faulty battery be intermittent? I do wheel the bike out backwards, but didn't think it would make a diference with ignition off. I've been wheeling it out backwards for the last 5 years and it hasn't played up before.
 
ABS II cut the wire that powers the ABS unit and feed it from the load shedding relay Thereby removing the low voltage spike!

It's equivalent to just having turned the key on but the engine is already started, if you see where I'm coming from?

It doesn't register the voltage drop as the starter draws current!

Mines been brill since I did it! BUT I didn't add their relay I just tied into the load side of the "load shedding relay" this is the big one in the fusebox that clicks when you push the starter button. It basically drops power from all electrical components except the starter, fuelpump, ignition, and instruments and for some strange reason the ABS remains powered up too???

I think it's in IBMWR I'll have a hunt for ya LINKY HERE
 
I get the same problem if the bike has been un used for a while. Put the optimate on it for a day or so, and hey presto, no more abs light problems.

An old schol test for the battery was to switch on the headlights and then try to start the engine. If the lights dimmed noticeably there was a battery/battery connection problem.

If yours are connected through a relay so that they switch off at start up try wiring a light straight across the battery terminals just for test purposes.

Better still get down to your friendly local auto-electrics specialist.
 
Same happens to mine , but you got brakes even if ABS is off , Had to try 3 times on sunday , that was after a spin up the road ,with all off ...In some ways its good to hear someone else having the same fault.
 
Thanks again fellas, I think Jaythro gets the big cigar :thumb2 I'll probably give it a go at Easter. I knew about the load shedding relay and I have the circuit diagrams, but didn't think to power the abs relay from there. I wonder what bright spark decided that it should bypass the load shedding relay and have such a high voltage threshold?? Probably the same guy that designed the 'dial damping relay' - what an unnecessarily complex bit of kit!! Also nice to know you're not alone :aidan
