New lights

The insipid weak yellowish original lights had to go. This unit came from doctorlight.pl.

Adam at doctorlight sourced the donor unit to save me from being bike-less for a few weeks. The setup is a twin halo, with LED projectors. The low beam is a single projector and the high beam is a four-LED job. When you turn the bike on, both halos come on as DRLs. The high beam switch works as usual for flashing or to switch high beam on. If you press and hold the high beam flash for 5 secs, the low beam comes on and stays on, so you can have halos plus low-beam for riding at night, and high beam whenever required. Very clever.

Fitment is straight onto the original plugs. Adam was very responsive and diligent in helping me track down a reverse polarity issue in my low beam wiring. One of the 10 previous owners had swapped + and - on the low beam wires for some unknown reason so it blew a fuse when connecting the new unit up.

Very happy with the whole thing. Cost was E500 + E150 for Adam sourcing the donor light, plus £100 VAT and duty on import.

A nice ride around rural Surrey yesterday. As well as the new lights, I put a proper top box on thanks to a certain member of this forum. It is a big improvement over the Hepco and Becker plastic thing that was on there previously.

I haven’t been out at night yet, but when I do I’ll let you know. Should be good for spotting lurking deer I hope.

Regarding MoT compliance, I think that relates to beam direction. The usual knob-based adjustment that tilts the whole light unit’s beam up and down is still there and working (the lights go into the OEM housing) so tilt is still available.

I have to say that the quality of workmanship to integrate the new lighting into the existing unit is very good indeed. I didn’t take enough pics of the back of the unit before I installed it, but I’ve added one below.

If you look at the FAQ available on doctorlight.pl you’ll see Adam there is positive about passing inspections. I’ll let you know next June!
