Has anybody junked the ABS brake system in favour of a standard non-linked system?

Can you just remove all the hard brake lines and ABS system and just replace them with a set of braided lines straight to the front and rear calipers respectively

Interested in your thoughts

I've read somewhere probably here, that the brake switch activation is through the servo or ABS, so you would need to add a brake light switch. Best best would be the ones that are built into a banjo.
That's the easy bit, don't know about the rest. In theory, you could???????? buy some hoses, and fit them from the master cylinders to the calipers. Leaving you to plug the original hoses, temporarily only.

Are you talking about ABS or linked brakes? If you're talking about ABS you can switch it off using the handlebar "Button". I'm not sure why you would want to though.

Linked brakes are a different kettle of brake pads entirely and I know bugger all about the BMW system but again I'd wonder why you would want to.

Cheers

Are youtalking about the 1100 and 1150

Standard ABS bike - yes

servo ABS bike - no, ( well, yes if you change the whole wiring loom, as well as a few other bits and pieces )

The reason I am looking at this is because I have brought a crashed 2003 150gGS. It has been stood for about 15months without turning a cog. Not sure what condition the ABS brakes are going to be in when I eventually contect a battery up and try and fire it up.

How can I tell if the bike is just an ABS model or has servo assistance as well.

Regards

Derek

Easiest and quickest way to tell is to look at the ABS ring on the left hand side of the front wheel. If it's solid and toothed, it's without the servos. If it's shiny and perforated, it's with the servos.

how do i know switch is working ?

the abs switch on the handlebars of my 2006 1200gs does not appear to do anything when pressed - its not referred to at all in the handbook even though the picture shows it ?? - i expected to see something showing on the clocks but nothing

Having never rode an ABS model 1200 I may be well off the mark here, but on the works 650GS's I rode you had to press & hold the ABS button for a few seconds to deactivate it. This would produce a flashing ABS light on the dash.

As I said it may be completely different to that. :augie

Chaps

I want to remove the ABS system too on my R1100GS. It’s heavy and has never kicked in once. I am planning a long trip next year and need the bike as simple and as light as possible. I know when I am sliding down that gravel track all wheels locked up I will be wondering why I did this.

But it’s coming off if its possible to do so.

My simplistic view is to take everything out except the master cylinders and connect them to the calipers with braided pipe. Just like all my other bikes

What to you think?
