My ABS lights have just started to sporadically NOT turn off as i pull away. My bike is a 2002 GS model and im wondering the likely issues.
I have read on a forum somehwhere that it could be a battery issue in that i need a new one. Is this likely or is it more likely to be a sensor somewhere. when i pull away if i hear it engage it has no issues but when i pull away if i dont hear it the lights continue to flash but it doesnt always happen so dont know what to do first to rectify it. any advice please?

Hi Mark, sounds silly but check your pads all round for wear and see they are ok. We have known this be a problem before.
If you want I will give you our techs number and you can chat with him.

One of the Mods could probably move this to the Oilhead section ???

You need to clarify the ABS type you have as If I recall September 2002 saw the first servo brake models out?

Seeing as you haven;t mention servo and presuming its ABS II

do the lights flash on and off together ?? and then when you pull away Do they start to alternate?

In which case it could be a dirty sensor ring or abs gap too wide A faulty sensor will make the lights flash alternately as soon as you switch on the ignition

If they flash together and then as soon as you press the starter they flash alternately i.e. one on one off and vice versa then it is "likely" to be either:- the starter motor is drawing way too much current due to magnet problem or maybe grease plate or the battery is on its way out

just to clarify. The lights flash alternatively when the bikes ticking over after initial start up then go out when theres not a problem and i pull away. when there is a problem they just flash alternatively when the bikes at tickover and continue to do so when i pull away. cheers. This has only recently started so i initially thought battery (with the cold weather coming)

Okay We'll try again

Mark when you switch on the ignition, Do both lights flash on and off together???

Yes = then there are are no faults in the ABS system initialisation sequence

No = i.e. one lamp is on and one lamp is off alternately Then there is a system fault For example a sensor with a broken wire inside would make the system flash alternately as soon as the ignition was switched on

So say the system is okay and the lights are both on and off at the same time

But as soon as you push the starter button they switch to alternate flashing? If this is happening then the ABS system has "seen" a voltage drop and has stopped the ABS system from being active

Causes of this are as above Battery on the way out or the starter motor needing a good check or overhaul

When the Lamps flash alternately You have no ABS end of story BUT Unlike the servo crap you have normal full power brakes

You can either stick a charger on at night or do the sensible thing and replace the battery Rather than burn out some electronic component because you are trying to save a few shekels It will cost you more in the long run trust me!

Thanks for the advice. i took my bike for a long run and have hand no issues with it now. dr Farkoff cheers mate i think its the battery from what youve said and with no bike use last two weeks in the colder weather i think that was the issue. ill keep an eye on it and try a new battery when i can get one and see how it goes. cheers

Get the same with mine from time to time, normally after not being ridden a while and forgetting the trickle charger. Go for a run for 10 miles, switch engine of then on and it goes away. If, and it only happened once, this does not work then stop, switch engine of and on again and sorted.
