Have just sold my 1100 in order to finance badly needed house improvements. However the new owner has apparently had problems after about a week with the ABS which resulted in a new control unit at the grand price of £1400 ! (Fitted). Unfortunately he didn't give me the opportunity to comment or advise as to alternative possibilities before spending his money. My own local dealer has said that most problems with the ABS can be found and just reset, I've also seen from this web-site that a tired battery can also influence the operability of the system. I never did have any problems with it myself but wondered if any of you might have, and more specifically, had to replace the unit. I'm concerned that the system may have been unnecessarily replaced.

Mine failed and reset in no time by grounding the middle wire under the saddle whilst holding the abs button down whilst the ignition was switched on. Sounds like it could have been a big ripp off.

Tell him to get the ABS unit back so he can check it out...

Is he asking you to contribute to the repair? As previously mentioned most abs faults occur with a tired battery, though occasionally an abs relay in the hydro unit can also lead to faults.Once fitted to the bike the hydro unit is then coded to that particular model of bike and thus cannot be interchanged with say a K1100Lt even though its the same unit.An expensive mistake me thinks

Thanks for your replies. He's not asked for any contribution, although he asked if I'm aware of any previous ABS problems, and he's obviosuly not pleased to be coughing up £1400. I'm not that confident he has made enough effort to establish and isolate what the real problem was. He's spoken to one BMW dealer who was responsible for replacing the ABS but that's not sufficient really at that level of cost, and where I may have been sympathetic had I had the chance to help eliminate cheaper remedies, I feel he's tied my hands.

Ultimately, I do feel sorry that his new bike has cost so much already but am reluctant to give away any of my hard earned readies when, as I say, I'm not confident he's taken a sufficiently responsible course of action, and the ABS was working when it was sold.

Its a difficult one is it not. You feel some kind of affinity with the guy as he has bought your steed. But I reckon that he just jumped in and got it fixed to quickly.

Personaly between 1400 pounds and ABS I would go for the money.

ABS

Low or battery on end of life seems to gie ABS problems.
I reckon the dealer saw him coming
Do you know where he went to have it fixed because it might be worth avoiding the sharks

The dealer was Vines of Guildford but I do want to make it clear that I can not and am not stating that they have deceived the new owner- I obviously do not know, but based on the evidence, please use this as a reminder to yourselves to be careful whoever you use.
