abs wont set

i turn on ign. wait approx 1 min start and move off.

red lights keep flashing alternatively. i stop repeat. pull off and same thing.
is it affected by cold? after 3 / 4 attempts it sets. any suggestions please.

No, I think it's a low battery-voltage thing. ABS won't set unless it has the full complement of volts to fire it up. Simple reset procedure (which I can't remember at this time of night).

Try a search on "abs reset" or summat and the answer will be there. (Earthing the brown wire under the seat rings a bell???)

thanks for the info found the answers i needed by doing a search abs reset. sounds like low battery is the most prob cause.

have to keep it toped up by riding out more frequently. cheers . muzz.

Battery.

Yeh mine did the same after it was parked in the sitting room for about 3 months, guessed it was the battery when the clock also went to 00:00, installed new battery (jell) and it's now fine.

Hi Murry, yes Verns right I'v found as the temp drops below zero the ABS dosent want to work, try switching youre ignition off and on it seems to work for me. It's this time of year when you most need it too hope this helps

Also make sure all the lights are turned off before you press the starter button. This allows a few more volts to supply the ABS which does struggle in the cold.

Yip mines does excactly the same, still does it sometimes even after fitting a new battery, usually when its been sat in the garage for a while, even tho its on a battery tender.

Ive taken to (whilst riding along) pulling in the clutch lever switching the ignition off then back on, first junction or traffic lights the ABS re-sets as soon as you pull away.

Mine too, I can tell when the battery is a little weak as even the clock seems to have lost time or reset itself to 00:00!

ABS Reset
Another situation that owners should possibly either know how to deal with or else carry a set of printed instructions for, is ABS reset.
In certain situations e.g. after an off, the ABS needs to be reset. You can see this because the red ABS warning lights flash not together as they normally do but alternately. The brakes are unaffected.
Normally a dealer has to reset the ABS. However several owners said that the last thing they wanted after coming off was to have non-functioning ABS. The following procedure can also be used. It is useful to carry a short length of wire stripped at both ends.
1. Turn ignition off.
2. Remove pillion and rider seats.
3. Locate the 3 wire plug by the toolkit and remove the blue termination. (It's for diagnostics so is not connected to anything).
4. Insert one end of wire into the *middle* socket.
5. Clip the other end firmly to ground.
6. Turn ignition on. Note that the two ABS lights continue flashing alternately.
7. Hold ABS button down for 8 seconds. The bottom ABS light should stay on, the top one off.
8. Release the ABS button.
„h If the reset is successful, both ABS lights come on.
„h If you didn't count to 8 or your ground is not good, then the top ABS light stays off. Start again and/or try pressing the ABS button before turning ignition on.
9. Turn ignition off, remove wire, reconnect plug and refit blue termination.

Locate the 3 wire plug by the toolkit and remove the blue termination.

Can anyone tell me if this is the socket in to which the BMW Computer Diagnostics plug, as mine has 6 wires running into it.. I can't see any other socket around that area. This is on an 1150GS, not an Adventure

Definately the battery with ABS, unless the battery is in tip top the ABS wont want to reset. My latest GS is non ABS which has sorted that problem but it is on its second battery under warranty after only 4k and 1yr old. Even now I dare not leave it for more than day not on it optimate. Even then it sounds like it isn't going to fire up from cold. hopefully it will be sorted out at its 6k service otherwise its bye bye BMW. Cant do with a beat that wont start!! Judging by the number of other threads on battery problems it makes you think there is a fundamental problem somewhere.

My 1100 battery lasted for 8 Years before it died. rapid battery demise seems to be an 1150 thing, although my 03 Adventure has a lead powder battery as standard (same as Hawker), if the later 1150s all have powder batteries then there may be a problem.

Hops description is for resetting the ABS on an 1100. The 1100 had a three pin socket that sat behind the fusebox, the ABS can be reset on the 1150 using the round socket that sits on the airbox, unfortunatly, I cannot remember the colours to use, but I'm sure somebody else will.

for the 1150 , if you turn the back of the dinos. socket it show the pin number you can joint the pin # 2 and pin number # 4, the number 4 is the ground. try and let us know........
