I am having a spot of bother with the ABS2 on my 2000 R850 GS.
I was getting regular errors, particularly in cold weather during the self-check so I recently implemented a fix that many other people have performed that delays the self-check until the engine is running and the alternator is generating. That has worked perfectly and now I never get the alternate flashing error due to low voltage on starting.
This has now highlighted some additional intermittent errors.
When pulling away from start (with correct flashing lights and no errors), I get the ker-chunk of the self-test, but sometimes, not always, this sends the lights in alternate flashing error mode. On analysis, when I put an LED on pin 2 of the diagnostic connecter under the seat, it flashes out error-code 7 which is the ABS-brain/ABS-unit error.
I can use the reset procedure to clear the error and on one occasion after clearing it and managing to pull away with a correct lights-out self-test I went out and tested the ABS by trying to lock up the rear. In stamping on the brake, the ABS made a noise like it was operating but then the lights went into alternate-flash mode and again on analysis it was a code-7.
I had read that sometimes crap in the lines can cause sticky pistons so I bled a bit of fluid (vacuum bleeder) out of the ABS unit from both circuits and it was perfectly clean, no crap or discolouration from what I could see.
As mentioned the error is intermittent, sometimes it's OK, sometimes it's not. I would say that temperature does affect it, if the bike has been running a while or the weather is warm it is less likely to error. Cold starting in cold conditions and I can almost guarantee that it'll go into error, which is a bummer this time of year!
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else I could try to try and fully diagnose and fix this? I'm wondering if the pistons are still a bit sticky and am contemplating dismantling and cleaning the bores out, but before I embark on that, I wanted to test the wisdom here.
Thanks for any suggestions.
