Accessory socket

Hi all

I'd like to add a normal accessories socket to the bike 2017 gs, I presume the original one powers down after the ignition is turned off ??

I'm thinking can I just piggy back off it or even disconnect the original and use the feed to power the new socket, any thoughts
 
It powers down around 30 seconds after the ignition is turned off, what are you planning on powerering.If you want permanent on your going to need to install a fused lead from the battery?
 
Mine powers down a couple of minutes after switching off the ignition.
I seem to think they are only rated at 2 amps before the can-bus trips them off and therefore limits the usefulness
If you want it to be ignition controlled you could piggyback a feed onto it and trigger a relay wired to the battery.
Another option....there is a BMW accessory wire which plugs inline between the loom connector and rear of the din socket. It provides a spur which you could then use to provide power to your standard socket and would eliminate tapping into wires or cutting the loom.
It's only about 3 inches long and is basically a Y piece. Sorry I don't have a part number-- might be worth a visit to your dealer's car and bike parts dept.

I still want it to power down as normal operation but I want to use a s3 fast charging usb adaptor for my phone and pad

That probably sounds like a better solution, use the feed of the original socket to trigger a relay fed direct from battery to new socket, then it will still power down when ignition is turned off
 
I had some problems when powering a full size 12V socket by tapping into the bike's DIN type accessory socket. I used the new socket to house a 12V to USB adaptor to power the phone I use as a satnav, but found that even if I had unplugged the phone the socket stayed live after switching off the ignition, and didn't power down after a delay as usual. I could tell this was happening because the blue LED on the adaptor stayed lit, and if I plugged the phone back in it started charging. I was concerned that the remaining small current drain from the adaptor when the phone was unplugged was keeping the socket live, and would eventually flatten the battery.

My solution was to instead power my new 12V socket from the socket on the bike's wiring loom that normally powers the BMW satnav. As I had removed the BMW satnav and cradle and unplugged its wiring from this socket, it was available to power my phone. I just needed to get the appropriate plug from Nippy Normans. This worked perfectly, shutting down as expected, following a short delay, when the ignition went off.
 
Agree with Fred, I used the port in the loom behind the headlight on the GSA as I was not using NAV, but I wonder if you could take a splitter off this port to power the nav and charge your phone, not sure. The Canbus could detect a slightly larger power draw, but not sure if your phone would take enough power to prompt this.

Yes, I'm not sure of the power capacity of this source, but I had no problems using a PD Fast Charger powered off it. That can put out about 3A at 5V, and allowing for conversion losses, that is probably no more than about 2A off the 12V supply feeding it. I've not tried powering a BMW Nav and a phone charger at the same time from this source, but if it were to allow 5A at 12V then it would probably be OK. I think I read that the accessory socket is electronically limited to 5A, so with a bit of luck maybe the Nav socket is the same?
 
I use the satnav, all I really need is an ignition live to switch the relay on and off, just thought the original accessory socket would be accessible, could use a light I suppose

The potential issue is that the relay current may be enough to keep the accessory port live. I've always tapped into the ignition live wire on the mini fuse block/connector under the rider's seat.
