I'm planning a trip down to Millau in September and am wanting to know if anyone knows of biker friendly places to stay in or very near to Millau.

I have looked through the threads and found nothing. Also as this is my first venture abroad on my bike, what paperwork do I need to have. So far I have found that I need my registration and insurance, but what else?

any help for this newbie would be welcome

Andre

Check out Logis Hotels.Mainly 2 star and very comfortable, reasonably priced as well. There are several in the Millau area.Im booked into one for Saturday night !
Unfortunatley Im in the biscuit tin for this trip cos the Yorkies are in tow :aidan
Have a good trip.:D

I found a couple of nice camp sites once I hit the town, by following signposts. The one I stayed in was along the river-very nice and quite central.

Andre,

HOTELS

What sort of hotel do you want?

Some people want to spend pennies, so opt for very basic accommodation (like Formula 1), others want a bit more comfort / services but in a homogeneous style with an English speaking receptionist (Ibis or similar). Others want a bit of 'adventure' and maybe a bit more expensive, so opt for private hotels (like the Logis chain mentioned). There is a thread on the various hotel types in France, a search will turn it up.

PAPERWORK

Original of your V5 'Log book'

Original of your insurance certificate, valid for the duration of your trip.

If you are not the registered keeper of the vehicle (ie. named on the V5) you will need the written permission of the owner to remove it from the UK.

Original MOT certificate (if applicable) - I have never been asked for one directly but all policemen like official looking papers.

The original green counter party to your driving licence and you might as well bring the picture card, too.

The original of your valid passport.

Your EHIC card for reciprocal medical care in the EU. http://www.nhs.uk/nhsengland/Healthcareabroad/pages/Healthcareabroad.aspx This is not a substitute for good insurance (see below).

Not required but essential if you do not want to end up in a bloody mess or to get very good help you if you are:

Personal accident / travel insurance valid for the duration of your trip and for the countries you intend to visit. It's as cheap as a cheap cheap thing. BUY IT and make sure it covers riding a motorcycle up to and including the capacity of you machine.

Breakdown / recovery insurance for your vehicle, valid as above. BUY IT!

There are several threads on UKGSer giving advice on both of the above. Similarly there are threads (two rather sad) detailing the real perils of going light in the insurance department. Put simply, how far can you push your bike with broken legs and how capacious is your wallet?

BITS 'n' BOBS

A spare ignition key for your motorcycle and the security locks. I have seen someone lock their bike (no need to go overboard) and then lose their ignition key. No problem, here is the spare..... BUGGER! No spare U-lock key, the only one was on the ignition key and it's lost, along with the house key.....

A credit and debit card. Consider telling your bank / card provider you are going to make sure they do not block it or annoy you with endless, "Are you in France? calls.

A mobile phone (and charger) activated for overseas roaming for: Voice, text and mailbox.

A suitable plug adaptor.

A half decent map or two. GPS is fine, except when it stops or you want to ask a local, with poor eyesight and fingers like sausages, to squint at your 3x2 reflective screen. See sticky on maps.

===

PS If you have more than one motorcycle...... Make sure you bring the right paperwork for the vehicle :blast Call for Blowzorn, line one.... :D:D

Thanks for all this extremely useful info. especially from Wapping.

As for hotels my main concern is for security of my bike at night and i'll be looking at all the suggestions and search the web.

Ok Jolly good.

Via-a-sis security.

France is not full of people looking to steal your motorbike. I am not 100% convinced that the third level underground of an homogeneous Ibis hotel is really so much safer than on the street outside. Just be sensible, much as you would be in the UK, I hope. To spend hours on end worrying spoils any holiday.

I can't remember seeing one thread on UKGSer saying, "My bike was stolen in (insert name of place across the Channel)" . But I have read lots that start, "My bike was nicked while I was at home".

That is not to say that it can't or doesn't happen. Maybe it's simply that people are simply a little bit more careful (not a lot) abroad than they are at home, without going overboard. Who knows?

Parking

Chap who owns the auberge de la cascade told us to put our bike in his garage. :thumb

Although when we stayed in Collioure we left the bike in a public pay and display. It was still there in the morning and we hadn't paid and displayed either. :D

Well played dadster, did you want to give a some reasonable justification for your opinion?

the rooms were poor as was the breakfast, and its closed 2pm-5pm:nenau but thats just my opinion

Stayed here http://www.hotels-de-millau.com/ :- last year for a couple of nites and was very good, bike parked in a bus shelter affair off road in private car park which is locked at nite . Little bit out of the town about 5 mins but swimming pool and resturant on site.

Agree with that :thumb2
A decent place, clean as a clean thing and the serving wenches in the restaraunt are lovely. If you want a wander into town it's only a few minutes away. Nice people and an easily good enough place for SWMBO without being in the 'plush' bracket. :)

I've booked this in Milau town for 5th September. Looks okay and from the photos they let you put the bikes in the courtyard.

Stayed here the year before last. Lovely place run by a husband & wife team. He cooks (really well) & she looks after front of house. I don't remember it being as dear as Tripadvisor has it but I do remember a beautiful 3 course meal was the same price as sh1te food at home.

It's about 20km from the Viaduct but you can make a nice morning out of riding along the Tarn under the viaduct, through Millau & down the Gorge du Tarn before climbing to the plateau & crossing over the viaduct :bounce1
