Thanks chaps... plenty to be going on with... we were intending to spend the night in the jewel of the south... Dover

We've used this quite a few times and yes it is very convenient for the peage.
There's also a Premier Classe on the same site which is cheaper but uses the same restaurant in the evening.
We use the Ibis in Calais at the end of the Chunnel exit road. Has secure parking and good reviews. Saves us a days A/L to hop over late in evening and kip there plus the trains are cheaper in evening.
Skip breakfast and have coffee and pastry in Autoroute services within an hour after setting off, so you can be on the road as soon as you get up.
The Ibis St Omer central is also fine but they do not Guarantee parking and its far enough off the Motorway to be a waste of time late at night.

Arras is a nice place to stop and about an hour down from the Channel. Lots of options to stop there too.
Premier classe!! I couldn't remember the name of it.
Staying in Dover will be a fair bit more expensive. If you stay in Calais use the B&B hotel at the St pierre turn off coming from the tunnel. It's currently 39 euros per night for twin rooms, actually sleep 3.
I always find it easier to set off early in France, ferries can be late, tiring and the food has gone terrible on P&O and Sea France. Last crossing took 3 hours due to low tides making the ramps unuseable!! we had to wait while the tide rose.
You pays your money.........

Although the breakfast is a lot better at the Campanile.
And weekend rates are less as well, Campanile is 55 euros at the weekend.
Guess / assume, but don't actually know, that Premier classe is less at the weekend as well.
But anyway you are booked now, tres bien.
