I keep getting the "virtual memory low" message I've had a look at the task manager and the two things using most memory are internet explorer and EXPLORER EXE. I don't really want to fiddle about too much, so I'm thinking of just upping my RAM is this the right thing to do?

I've got a bog standard Acer Travelmate 2700 and according to the Orcalogis website I need a 200-Pin PC2700 (333Mhz) DDR SODIMM. I've lookeed on MR Memory and Play.com websites and they are around £40.00 .

1. Are there any makes of chip to look out for?

2. Where would be the best place to buy this?

3. Do I go for a 1gb chip or is that overdoing it?

4. Am I likely to do damage putting it in myself?

All answers gratefully recieved.

Log on to Crucial Memory's site, and get it to scan your laptop.

It will report what you have, what you can fit - and how much it costs.

Ordering is easy, fitting is easy.

The simple, painless way :rob

May not be the RAM. Good article here can explain it better than me.

Thanks but I tried all that last night, all my settings are right as far as the percentage bit goes so it looks like increasing RAM is the way to go.

If it helps I get the same message from the work laptop now and again. Usually just ignor it or restart machine. Never noticed any problem because of it though!

Virtual memory is a supplement to the physical RAM which uses space on your hard disk. Shortage of hard disk space or a fragmented disk can cause problems. Tidying up the hard disk might help. However, the best solution is to provide more physical RAM.

As Blackal says, use the tool at crucial.com to identify the RAM you need and then order it from crucial. You can probably save a few quid on Ebay but don't bother. Crucial's service & guarantee is worth the premium.

This should fix the problem, however a 2700 is bound to be getting on a bit now, so there could be some other issue on the motherboard.

First thing I'm going to do when I get home.

Just upgraded my Ram in my iMac using Crucial. Ordered on Thursday afternoon and becuase I was not in a rush for the memory I opted for the free delivery. Memory arrived first thing Friday morning and fitted and running in minutes:thumb Used them before with no problems. Possibly a bit cheaper elsewhere but quite confident in quality, and aftersales, if needed.

Did the Crucial system scan and said I was running 512 mb ram with one empty memory slot. I ordred a 1 gb card and it arrived today, blimey it's like a different machine. When I want it to do something it doesn't sit there thinking about it, it now gets on with it. Well worth the money.

Thanks again for the advice.
