Allihies again.. but off to Asia soon....
Has anybody got an Acer portable P.C. I need one and here in Belgium I can get it with English Windows instead of French or Dutch. Of course I could simply reinstall the whole lot myself but seeing as the licence is provided with the machine I'd rather have it in English to start with.
I have had one person tell me they're not reliable so any news would be good.
Plus I think I'll go the INTEL way so what is the advantage of a Centrino 1.4 over a P4 2.4 GHZ?????

I have been recommended one by our company's main computer supplier yesterday. He spoke highly of them, and not because it's the only brand they sell.

Centrino is the newest Intel processor for laptops. It saves energy compared to older types, so your batteries last longer. I've been told that a Centrino 1.6 GHz is about the same speed as a Pentium IV 3.0 GHz. I haven't checked it, but I'm sure you'll find more info on the Intel website.

They now offer the Aspire 2003 at 1817 euros (excl. VAT) and Aspire 2001 at 1404 euros. If you're interested, I can give you their address. And they do come with Windows XP Home edition in English.

Cheers,
Michel

I've just bought for my own birthday an Acer Travelmate C300 series (Tablet PC), and so far, I'm not impressed !! Coming from HP and Compaq portables, there are quite some low quality stuff on a portable that costs 2500 euros!!!

I'm bringing it back to the shop for a general inspection in the new year.

Acer

Nope, these are low cost chinese badge engineered laptops, avoid if possible certainly don't spend your own money.

The best laptops are made by Compal in Japan who do not sell under their own name, they are badged Dell, Fujitsu Siemens Amilo range and Evesham Micro higher end.

Compaq's Hp's and Toshiba are all good as well.

Well besides the mixed feelings about Acer I bought one a week ago.

£1100 VAT included Acer Aspire 2001 Centrino 1,4 512MB 15,4 screen. And to be honest it seems to be the dogs balls. Some of the guys where I am contracting at the moment have the compaq equivalent and are impressed with what I've bought for the same money. But I get 512MB ram and windows in English.

I'll let you know later if it remains as high in my esteem after a while working with it.

A couple of the guys at our place used to have them and didn't reckon very much to them, they switched to Dell in the end.

Daughter sometimes hires one from school (50p per night), and compared to my
i book the screen is absolute bollo*Ks.........
Mind to be fair they will take some stick I suppose......

CRAP Did,nt meen to mention the word STICK

dont want anybody getting the wrong end of it.........:D :D

err not quite....

Acer is owned by BenQ who produce over 40% of the laptops from Japanese manufacturers, as well as various others. BenQ also manufacture 60% of laptop keyboards (world wide) as well as desk top keyboards and mouseseses for the likes of Logitech (20" container of MS keyboards - <€2 per keyboard)

Compal, like BenQ are Taiwanese and have factories in China. Both ODM mobile phones for Ericsson and Motorola (to name a few). BenQ will produce around 25M mobile handsets this year a few more than Compal and many other "mobile phone companies"

To see an example of the crossover here is a keyboard recently completed for the Sendo X smartphone:D
