Hi All, I’m of on hols next week and my oil level is just above minimum, BMW says I Must use their oil and nothing with additives 😆 I don’t have time to get to a showroom, what if any, alternative oil can I get just to top up if needed.

Thanks

Remember, any decent brand will do at a push . Any oil is better than no oil.
I’d be more interested to know why the level is low ?
None of my 3 water cooled GS’s ever used a drop of oil and I wouldn’t expect a 1300 to either.

just read the manual for the generic spec and then buy a brand you like. Pay attention to the JASO MA2 rating specifically for wet clutches. Halfords do an own brand one that met the spec for my RS, or spend a bit more on Putoline, Motul etc.

Pop in and buy a half litre bottle from nearest BMW dealer , that said anything of the right spec will do at a push .

BMW are funny at times ,when I had my hexhead and first LC their oil was made by Castrol and that is all they would recommend .

Following year they started their "own brand " Advantec oil which is made by Shell and BMW as a manufacturer then say that you must use it and Castrol products were no longer recommended

Just buy Shell Advantec.
BMW don't actively recommend Shell's own brand oil , most probably as it does not have an attached BMW tax !!!!!!

Have no doubt the stuff is exactly the same and comes off the same production line

Just before I went on my first European tour with my new to me1200 gs lc I anticipated I may need to top up my engine oil like I did with my previous bike which always used half a litre in 3,000 mile so I purchased a litre of BMWs own oil as I don’t like mixing different brand oil in my bike.
Many 1,000s of miles & European trips later never needed to top up engine oil between services but still carry that same litre bottle just in case 👍

Why carry it? I used to carry a litre when I did my trips on an R1150GS or R1200GSA TC, but since switching to my KTM the space is used for a bottle of malt instead, at least that way the liquid in the container gets used.

But that space may be needed for all the bolts that drop off the Ktms 🤣🤣

Shouldn't BMW top up for free - if they are servicing it shouldn't be loss between services, if there is then they should top up (and we end up paying for a full litre on service when only part is specified!). I go to dealer and ask

Believe it or not I do carry somethings in the event that It may be able to help some one one day , like carrying a jump pack that one day may help on of those unfortunate 1250 owners with the hot starting problems if you get my drift.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I use the space on my KTM for an overnight change of clothes for the times I have to leave the bike at the dealers till they get the required parts needed for a fix.
I should be so lucky to have a bottle of malt in it.

Robbed stupid as usual £14 a litre in Germany !!!

Any oil would do just fine if you stay within the specs.

Another vote for Motul, been using that for years on all my bikes, never an issue.
