adventure low 1st gear Mod

well its like this

Last year I put my 1150GS final drive onto my 1150RT. Both are 2002 models. There was no difference. Revs were the same in all gears at all speeds - as close as I could tell by looking at the rev counter anyway.

Riding both bikes back to back I see no difference between the gearing at all. Both have a 1st gear way too tall for London traffic (where I work) but 6th is a peach on the motorway.

Gears...i know what you mean...according to my calcs the rt should have had a 32 tooth crown and the gs 31.
If you fit the gs1100 crown thats 33 teeth, so there should have been a difference, unless the rt had a diffferent crown fitted.

I have an 2000 R850GS dose anyone know if i can fit a 6th gear into it as i feel it would be more fuel efficient on the motorways and bring costs down for the long miles i do.

maybe change the fd or..

maybe change the final drive or fit an 1150 od box if it will fit?

I'm pretty certain that a 6th gear won't be an option as the 850/1100 series gearboxes were only 5 speed. 1150's came with the extra cog & were a different design completely, so they're not compatible. You can certainly look at swapping the final drive, as the 850 was the lowest ratio FD available. Unfortunately, you lose out on driveability though, as the 850 is down on torque in comparison with it's bigger bro'.

Checkout Anton Largiader's interactive site for all things gearbox/FD related.

You'l find an 1150 on an 850 much too high, the 850 gearing is very low so an 1150 wouild be undrivable in about fourth gear.

850 GS FD is 3.36:1 ratio as standard. You should be able to go to an 1100GS FD at 3.0:1 but it will damage your ability to accelerate. However, it will make each gear cover a wider range of speeds so means less frenetic gear changing. I fitted an R1100S FD which has raised the ratio from 2.82:1 to 2.75:1. Top gear now gives 85mph at 4000rpm so is great on the motorway but I never use it much, otherwise, as 1st-5th are now a bit longer & cover much more of my riding than before.

The only way you'll know if it works for you is to try it & see, but you can always swap back & sell the FD on if you don't like it.
