Hi,
Does anyone here have any experience re putting Adventure shocks/suspension etc on a standard GS?
My shocks are due for replacement anyway and so I thought it a good time to consider an upgrade.
Mine is an 03 plate twin spark. It is all completely standard apart from braided hoses and ABS removal ( do the hoses need extending? ).

I do find the current seating position a bit 'hunched'. Will the taller suspension help re this at all or is that cured by bar risers and dropped pegs?
I am not talented enough to do this myself and will get proper help to do it but I am seeing if it's worth it or whether I am just creating issues for myself before I start to price it up etc.

The ADV suspension (not actually sure if it is different ?) wont alter your seating position. AS alluded to, you alter that with peg lowering and bar risers, new seating etc
I'd seriously look at upgrading the stock suspension to either Wilbers, Ohlins or Nitron. They come up for sale quite regularly on here. Piece of cake to fit...i.e an hour and a half start to finish with basic tools and skills (and a Haynes manual for the first time) Give it a go

You can fit adv shock on BT you will need the adv centre stand to do it properly. The standard GS handles better so think twice about it. The adv suspension only becomes an issue if you like jumping bridges with the throttle wide open.

Suspension will not change your position on the bike, bar risers and footpeg lowering if you are just trying to better your seating position.

Nitron shocks are very good, I'm very pleased with mine.

as above, it's really easy to do it yourself, I did mine in less than an hour :thumb 5 nuts n bolts. One to move the tank back, remove top nut on the front, remove Lower bolt and the shock just slides out. Tank back on (don't forget to check throttle cables are seated properly) remove top shock bolt and lower shock bolt (you may need to remove the rear wheel, but it can be jiggled out without wheel removal). Oops, add another bolt because you need to undo the preload adjuster too.

Reverse of the above to fit new ones. Strap around the front wheel and centre stand is a wise safety measure.

Ok thanks for your replies.

I want to keep the handling as it is because I find excellent and so I think I shall go down the easier ( and cheaper! ) direct replacement route.

I will source bar risers and lowered pegs.

Thanks again.

I fitted an ADV rear shock to a standard GS for more rear ride height. Can't remember exact number but the ADV is about 12mm longer. Anyway, both standard and ADV shocks were completely rebuilt for a fair comparison but ADV was too soft compared to standard so I swapped back. Now running YSS front and rear and very happy, especially the front.
