Here's an odd one...

Has anyone else discovered, as I did last night, that their top box can be locked/unlocked with the little plastic protective insert thing as opposed to the key! :blast

David.

No, not that - I would expect the plastic key to work it. I mean the little plastic tab that you're meant to put into the lock mechanism to prevent mud etc. from getting in.

Could the pins have dropped out from the lock perhaps??

Hmm, sounds like they might have. My 'leafs' dropped out of one of the barrels after a couple of days. Dealer fixed NP.

Saying that, I dont have a little plastic tab that you describe - any chance of a piccy? I do have the round rubber thing which keeps the mud out, but that doesnt unlock it, and is to shallow and soft to even attempt :nenau

That's what I have on my panniers, but the top box has basically a hard plastic version of the same thing - goes into the lock a little deeper. I can never remember which is the older type and which is the newer - see here for info

I had exactly the same problem. The new 'hard plastic' lock inserts can open the locks, if you are unfortunate to have a certain lock I suppose. At first my dealer did not believe me over the phone, and was very surprised when I took my panniers in and demonstrated the problem to them. They said they have never seen nor heard of this problem before. They said they would raise it with BWM and see what they have to say, however I have not heard anything. Anyway, their solution was to provide me with the old style soft rubber inserts which do not activate the lock.

Regards

Admiral.

I have exactly the same issue with the plastic tabs. I have cut them down until the it stops engaging with the lock. It still stays in the lock and does not turn now.

Interesting. Just been out to try mine (bought in August 08, don't know manufacture date of the box) and it won't - the plastic insert feels 'hard' but starts to twist once any force is applied.

The locks on panniers / top box on 1150 /1200 arent up to much.

I found out first when I could open mine on my old 1150 with a small swiss army knife, and dont have any trouble doing the same on my 1200 to box.

Have since put a secondary lock on the box

Hmm. I have the softer rubber versions of the tabs on my panniers. I think I'll try the plastic one in the panniers locks and the other top box lock to prove whether it's an issue with the tab/key combination or just that particular lock.

Very annoying considering I've previously been using the top box to store laptop/helmet when out and about

So,

The description "lock" may be a little exaggerated then?

I no longer have secure panniers, I have boxes with lids.

Excellent

Jim

It seems so :(

I took the plastic insert off my top box last night and tried it in the lower lock (the one that holds the box onto the frame) and it unlocked it. It also unlocked all of the locks on my panniers :spitfire

Anyone know how best to contact BMW to complain?

problems with locks they are designed to be opened and some will accept anything as a key.:blast

best one I saw was one of those heavy bike locks which you could undo with a bic pen...now that's genius

Well,
It all seems a bit cheap and nasty now.

I love this bike, I,ve done some fantastic things on it but Im getting sick of the regular stuff going wrong, then this!

In the summer I was talking up these bikes stating that there were some regular problems with them however, that meant that you knew what to expect, so that was an advantage..............mmmm?

Problem is, even Goldwings had cracked frames and over-heated.

Does anyone make anything that lasts, that includes makers of DVD players and microwaves.

Sure, I agree that no lock is infallible, but considering that these locks are meant to be matched to our ignition keys by the dealer changing the pins around? I for one found that a big factor in deciding to buy the BMW/TT boxes over other makes. It turns out that despite the locks being "matched" they can be unlocked by a simple plastic wedge!

I don't expect them to be like a safe, but for the money I at least expect them to put up some sort of resistance :nenau

Have you actually tried to get this fixed? Phone the dealer who sold you the bike and ask them to sort it - it's what they're there for! :rob It sounds like the lock barrel hasn't been assembled correctly. Replace it and it's now secure... forget about it. :) (Now of course, if they can't fix it and find that ALL locks do this, then we have a problem... )

Haven't contacted a dealer yet... However, I figured that it might just be the one lock (incorrectly assembled or gone wrong perhaps) so I tried ALL of them (see my previous posts in the thread). The plastic tab unlocked them all.

Admiral and Shari appear to have the same issue

It seems that the supplying dealer matches the locks to your existing key.
They move or replace the leaves in the barrels unitil they match the key. There is a "kit" avialable that supplies new leaves, but will be a cost to the dealer. On both my current GSA and my previous GS I was "lucky" that my dealer either has a good supply of alternative leaves, or was prepared to pay to get the right ones.
I can imagine as either a cost or time cutting exercise using only the leaves that fit, and removing those that do not. That could compromise security, if the only leaf that fitted was near the top of the barrel and need to klifted entirely to free the lock off.

IMHO, I woul dretunr the lock to the supplying dealer and ask they fix the problem. Seeing that they coded the lock to your key they should be fairly sussed as to why it does not work ;-)
